Few names in our maritime history garner such respect and admiration as the renowned Hood lineage.

CW Hoods boatbuilding career started at the age of 12, when he was enlisted to help restore his family's International One Design (IOD) sailboat. As a young man, he busied himself with countless projects and continued to hone his skills in building and restoration.

In 1992, Hood moved on from restoration projects to build his own design, a small tender known as the Ocean 1. Though quite simple in form, she featured such innovations as injection molding, a self-bailing cockpit and roller reefing sail. Demand quickly exceeded capacity, and CW Hood, together with lifelong friend and fellow boatbuilder Chris Stirling, founded CW Hood Yachts.

Through the following years, the small crew at CW Hood worked hard to expand their portfolio. Throughout their growth, they became adept at such aspects as sound and vibration engineering, vacuum-bagged and cored composite construction, and in 1995 the company earned the honor of being the sole US-based builder for the IOD class.

    International One Design

The International One Design (IOD) is a classic racing sloop with strong representation across the globe. There are currently ten active fleets spanning five countries, featuring national clubs in Maine, Massachusetts, New York and California, as well as international clubs in Bermuda, Norway, Scotland and Sweden. Her class was the first ever to achieve International Classic Yacht status with the International Sailing Federation (ISAF).

The Hood family has been racing IODs for generations, and CW Hood Yachts is proud to carry on this legacy as the sole authorized North American builder for the class. The IOD is offered in a number of build stages, and customized cruising packages are also available

    Choosing A CW Hood Yacht

Take a walk down the dock at a typical boat show these days, and you will come across an incredible variety of boats, diverse not only in their appearance but also in their engineering, hull design and propulsion systems. Picking out a model that is well-built and well-matched to your boating needs can prove to be quite a challenge.

    Durability

Those that make a living off their boats know best how costly a visit to the mechanic can be. More downtime equates to less income. With regards to durability, the advantage of the CW Hood waterjet is twofold. First, the unit itself is constructed of an aluminum alloy housing and stainless steel components, which are both excellent at combating a corrosive marine environment. Second, with no exposed appendages below the keel of the hull, there is no risk of accidental grounding or impact from floating debris, allowing you to cruise with confidence.

    Safety

With no underwater appendages or exposed propeller blades, CW Hoods waterjet drive systems make for safer boating. Going for a swim off the transom? No need to worry, as there are no sharp or rotating parts to cause injury. Didn't see that submerged log until it was too late to alter course? In a propeller-driven boat, you might be dead in the water, but a waterjet will suffer no damage as a result of debris or submerged obstacles. Waterjets are also preferable for use in environmentally sensitive areas, where a propeller might be capable of damaging bottom growth or injuring marine animals.
