In order to raise or lower the ladder, the ladder has to be brought level to the horizon. The ladder will not rotate from the storage to use position if the ladder is not held parallel to the ground/water/horizon. A lot of physical, back bending work is required to get the knack of working this ladder. If a person tries to rotate the ladder just under or over the horizontal position you can bend the thick mounting brackets. Be ready to drill 12 holes in your boat in order to attach this ladder. The rungs are deep and the ladder is well built. The problem is being able to hold the ladder "straight out" (parallel to the horizon) in order to change position (usage to storage). After 7 years on the 27' Party Barge, the swivel broke on the ladder. I'm sorry to say that I switched back to a ladder that wasn't so high maintenance. A person with a bad back will not be happy with this ladder due to the effort required to move the ladder because you have to grab the top rung, lift the ladder out of the water, hold the ladder straight out, turn the ladder over without raising or lowering the attitude of the ladder (keep it parallel to the horizon).
