A common concern in the boating world is the hull gel paint wearing down over time. This can be easily remedied by ... read more carefully, attentively, and regularly maintaining and reapplying gel coat to the hull. Below are some guidelines and recommendations that will give you instruction on how to maintain the paint on your boat.
      • A few different gel coat applications that can be used are: Gel-Kote, One Step Finish Gel-Kote, Gel Paste.
      • Gel-Kote: polyester gel that remains tacky between coats and requires the mold release agent to fully cure.
      • One Step Finish Gel-Kote: a polyester gel that cures to a hard surface without the mold release agent.
      • Gel Paste: a polyester gel that is used to repair severely damaged and deeper gouges in the gel coat. It does not require the mold release agent but does require sanding between coats.
      • Any of these three types can be brushed, rolled, or sprayed on. However, depending on the application, some gel coat may need acetone to spread the compound.
      • Refer to instructions as given by the manufacturer.
      • Apply the gel coat paste onto the scratch with a flexible spreader.
      • Remove any excess paste.
      • Cover up pasted area with a sheet of plastic film.
      • Peel away the plastic after 24 hours.
      • You will need to sand it down, depending on how smoothly the gel coat was applied.
      • Use 80 grit sandpaper.
      • Be sure to only sand the gel coated area, and not the surrounding areas.
We recommend consulting with a mechanic, local dealer, or painting professional before puraching gel coat and/or proceeding to apply the gel coat.
