J Boats J/100 - Cruising Sailboat

2009 J Boats J/100 Description

There’s nothing quite like steering a sleek, fast boat with a light touch on the tiller, the stability of a keel below, being close to the water and sliding through waves with barely a wake or whisper. One’s standard of acceleration and that feeling of being one with wind, wave and boat probably started on a small dinghy…a Hobie Cat, Sunfish or inland scow. Then as one’s boats got larger, some of the magic faded. Sure, cruising was an adventure and the camaraderie of a winning race crew unforgettable. But, now it seems there’s less time for such pursuits. Priorities change. Every moment counts. Time’s too precious and the alternatives too numerous to put up with any boat less than what will recapture those simple joys of sailing. J/100 is designed to do just that. The comforts that experienced sailors appreciate are part of the package. A two cylinder inboard saildrive hums along at 6.5 knots like a sewing machine, when you can hear it. Why limit your horizons because the wind might die? There’s a bona fide marine head and even a couple of bunks with an option for a V-berth forward for the occasional overnight. A dodger works to extend the sailing season. If you plan to single-hand the boat or do some relaxed non-spinnaker racing, the Hoyt jib boom shown above works great! Using this system, TERN won what one captain called, “the race from hell”…the 2004 Maine Retired (Age 65+) Skipper’s Race. In dense fog, torrential rain, lightning, and 40 degree windshifts, the J/100 excelled. No need to overwork the crew or have anyone on the foredeck when there’s a self-tacking jib and automatic whisker pole. TERN tacked effortlessly on 10 degree shifts, winning the trophy for the fastest of 38 starters. Five minutes back were larger boats with more crew, big winches and huge genoas. If the joy of sailing is a priority… the feel of acceleration and response of a good boat… we believe you’ll find this ‘J” to be 100% perfect for your day’s sail! SCRIMP: is short for Seemann Composite Resin Infusion Molding Process. SCRIMP is driven by vacuum to distribute resin over and through any DRY preformed part. Dry fibers are placed in mold, with core (Balsa). Which is then covered by a special SCRIMP cloth and a flexible vacuum bag, a high pressure vacuum is then applied and a series of resin tubes draw catalyzed resin into the part. SCRIMP is a high quality method of production which produces results repeatedly and consistently. It allows dimensional control and regularity of weight. Unlike a pre-impregnation process, SCRIMP does not require special materials storage conditions, nor an oven. An economic and reproducible process, direct positioning of dry fibers is easier and more precise than in traditional hand lay-up processes. It also allows controlled placement of fiber direction, as it is not impeded by gel times etc… The perfect control of the quantity of resin infused and the dry placement cloth make it possible to obtain extremely homogeneous finished parts with perfect surface condition on the mold side. The weight variation of the piece is very small (1 to 2% only), a performance which is impossible to achieve with hand lamination.
