problems with this ladder design
by Robert from Chicago, Illinois on August 13, 2014
Well it is very difficult to talk about this 7 step ladder because I am still waiting for it to be delivered. It was to be shipped shortly after I ordered it, however was placed on back order to be shipped on August 8th. It was not shipped on that date. I called Iboats on August 10th to find out when it would be shipped. Customer Service assured me that they would find out and get back to me, I am still waiting for that. I had previously purchased 2, 5 step ladders of the same design, one of those I returned yesterday after about three weeks use. The screws that were supplied with the ladder were totally inadequate and pulled out of the dock and the entire ladder twisted its frame. This happened even though I had drilled 2 additional screws (longer and much more substantial) thru the frame and into the dock, had I not done this the ladder would had fallen into the water with the person using it. The second 5 step ladder that I did not return is working fine but only after I spent almost $175 dollars on welding additional supports under the steps (which had started to bend after 2 days use) and an extension at the bottom of the ladder so that it rests on the lake bottom. Another real fault in design is the use of bolts and nuts to hold the two segments of the ladder together. These bolts are positioned exactly where you slide your hands when you are climbing up the ladder and consequently have real potential for injuring hands. I replaced all 16 of these bolts with rivets that do not protrude where they can cause injury. This ladder should only be used where it rests securely on the bottom of the lake/river etc. If the bottom of the ladder is hanging free in the water it will not last very long. I have ordered the 7 step ladder and intend again to pay a lot of additional money to reinforce it and replace bolts with rivets. That is the only way this product should be used. Robert Frerck
