How to Measure Steering Cables:

"Measure Twice. Order Once."

Replacement of existing Cable:
For Rotary steering cable replacement, measure existing cable as follows: Measure plastic cable jacket in inches, add 18", and round up to the next foot. Order that length cable.
For Rack steering cable replacement, measure existing cable as follows: Measure plastic cable jacket in inches, add 30", and round up to the next foot. Order that length cable.

For New Installation: Measure cable routing path from wheel center to engine connection, as follows:
A = Center line of wheel to gunwale (or deck, if routed downward),

B = Dash to Transom,

C = Gunwale to centerline of cable connection at centered tiller.

For Cable Installations through Engine Tilt Tube:
Add A, B and C +6", then round up to the next foot. Order that lenth
cable.

For Cables Mounted to Transon, Splashwell or Stringer:
Add A, B and C, then subtract 6" and round up to the nest foot. Order
that length cable.

Cable routings (such as those found on pontoon boats) may vary
from this drawing. Confirm length by laying a garden hose along
cable path and measure run from wheel to engine connection point.

Easily installed. Only had a chance to use one time but steers so much better than when I purchased the boat used. Put the boat through sharp turns at idle and at speed. Boat responded easily to pressure and I think I will enjoy the no feedback option. I would recommend this product.

by Daryl from Salem, Virginia on May 14, 2013
The steering works like new on my 1992 Ranger 374V but installation was more involved than I thought. I had to make a steering wheel puller in the machine shop to get the wheel off and the motor had to be removed using a cherry picker in order to install the cables to the motor, so I gave the job to my boat mechanic to do for about $300 labor.

My steering was tight and binding. After the nfb, wheel is smooth and has a perfect stiffness. I would recommend and install in my next boat.

Q:
Is this what i would need for a 2007 Mercury Optimax 150? how long in the bar that the steaeing cables go into?
A:
Not sure what you mean by the second question. The way you measure for a steering cable is measure old cable. Just measure the black coating and then add 30 inches for rack and round up. You can use this for your motor though it just depends on what size you need. Sizes can depend on boat so you will need to know how long you need it.
