We recently bought a 1976 Catalina 22 sail boat. The PO had a much smaller 4 lb. fluke-style anchor on the boat with only about two feet of 1/4" chain connected to it. The owner's manual for the C22 said a 8-12 pound "Danforth-type" anchor should be used with between 10-15 feet of 3/8" chain and 200-300 feet of 3/8 anchor line. This 10 pound anchor was right in the range of what the C22 owner manual recommended and the price, even after shipping, was much better than a similar anchor at my local West Marine so I bought it. I also picked up 15 feet of 3/8" galvanized chain and 200 feet of 3/8" three-strand nylon line to go with it. It's probably overkill, even though this is specifically what the owner's manual recommends, and we got a big Rubbermaid oval laundry basket to store it all in. The holes in the side of the laundry basket plus the extra ones I drilled in the bottom for water drainage allows my anchor and rode to be able to thoroughly dry out between uses. I've only used it once so far and anchored in about 25 feet of water and after we set the anchor we had way more rode left than we needed on that occasion, but the anchor did what it's supposed to do! Now if I could only come up with an easier method of rolling up the anchor line and storing everything after weighing anchor.
