Boating Life Review;

Because of its length and hull design, the 292 corners well not only in smooth water, but also in the rough stuff. Making sweeping turns in choppy water yields no pounding and results in a ride that can best be described as "cushy:" smooth, controlled comfort. But then, Cobalt buyers expect comfort, and there are no disappointments here. Enter from the rear swim platform and walk through the port transom door. Thick snap-in carpeting lines the length and width of the interior. Beneath the carpeting lies a self-bailing, nonskid deck with two storage lockers. The front locker is deep and long enough for skis, and the rear is sized for bulkier objects, such as kneeboards and wakeboards. Despite the boat's size and elegance, it's perfectly suited for water-sports. A heavy stern and adjustable trim tabs and drive units allow the driver to tailor the wakes for tubing and boarding. In the portside locker at the stern, you can find a tool kit, fire extinguisher, fresh-water fill port and an electric inflator to blow up those tow toys. More to its purpose, the 292 is ideal for entertaining. Loads of floor space give your guests room to move around. Yet the boat remains stable, with little pitching when walking from side to side. There is honestly enough room to seat 12 adults comfortably - four of them in the bow. A 10-disc CD player with six speakers fills the cockpit and bow with sound, and gunnels are deep enough to make guests who may be unaccustomed to the water feel safe without feeling "boxed in." At 36 mph, the sound meter registered a paltry 79 decibels, making the 292 one of the quietest boats we've tested. People expect that kind of luxury and refinement from Cobalt. In fact, the Marine Matrix Boat Ownership Survey of 3,970 owners of 27 different brands of runabouts shows that Cobalt ranks first in all product attributes but one. In that category, Cobalt finished second in exterior styling by a single percentage point, which is kind of baffling when you look at the 292. Its lines are graceful with tasteful gel-coat accent stripes. Inside, the dash is upholstered with form-fitting hand-sewn vinyl. Genuine wood appliques are dipped in urethane for a smooth finish and fitted with aircraft-style stainless-steel switches. Materials used for the seats are unique to Cobalt, right down to the "ostrich-skin" pattern it uses for accent. Seat cushions that aren't removable swing on heavy-gauge aluminum piano-style hinges. Port and starboard helm seats feature flip-up bolsters for increased visibility during docking and other slow speed maneuvers.
