Buying a boat? Here are some things you should know to help make it a little easier
- Decide what type of boat is best for your needs; some boats are made for specific purposes, bass fishing, water skiing, etc. and others are better suited for general on the water fun. Determine the activities you will be using it for and select a boat that meets those requirements.
- Research the boat you are interested in purchasing, find out as much as you can from other boaters, dealers, magazines, books, the Internet, and by attending boat shows.
- Figure out your “boat budget.” Beyond the purchase price you will need to consider other costs of ownership: Fuel, maintenance, dry stack or slip if you will not be trailering your boat, winter storage and winterizing and insurance.
- New boat or used boat? New boats are expensive, and boats depreciate fast in the first few years but new boats can be ordered with the layout and options you want, and come with a warranty. Also, some models are scarce on the used market so if you are not willing to wait for one to appear then new is th best way to go.
- Be comfortable with your decision. Buying a boat is a major decision and investment. Time spent researching your new boat and making sure it will meet your needs will be time well spent. When you buy well you will enjoy and use your new boat much more.
