She was built by the Canadian Coast Guard and designed for research and rescue at sea and can operate at least 200 nautical miles from the coast. She was transformed into an oceanographic research vessel during the winter-spring of 2002. The vessel is Internationally Classed and is certified by the International Ship and Port Facility Security organization (ISPS)  as well as the International Safety Management organization (ISM).  She has accommodations for 24 people. She is fully equipped for underwater research and carries 5 different cranes including 2 gantries. She carries one composite and one refrigerated container, each measuring 8 x 15 meters. She also has an electronic, wet and dry lab and a hold with a capacity of 26.25 cubic meters. Her aft work platform measures 133 square meters. Her life-saving equipment is fully SOLAS compliant and her fire-fighting equipment is state of the art. Her reverse osmosis water making equipment is capable of producing 10,000 liters per day. The vessel has a series of advanced winches of various capacities capable of providing support for virtually any type of oceanographic research. She has 3 Simrad EK 60 MK1 split beam transducers, a SBE-21 Thermosalinograph, a Wetstar Chlorophyll fluorimeter, 1 fixed ADCP transducer, 1 fixed hull Edgetech Mount transducer Sub-bottom Profiler and numerous other hydrographic  testing devices. The vessel has state of the art electronic charting equipment in her research spaces and navigation bridge. In addition, she is being fitted with a Dynamic Positioning System. She has a complete self contained weather station and is capable of performing virtually any oceanographic research mission.
