Designer: Joel White Measurements LOA: 23’2” Beam: 6’1” Draft: 1’10” (board up) 5’2’ (board down) Displacement: 2,000 lbs. Sail area: 193 sq. ft. The Sakonnet 23 is a simple boat to sail and enjoy. With a moderate sail area/displacement ratio, narrow 6-foot beam and light displacement, the Sakonnet easily reaches hull speed in light as well as moderate winds. Her low center of gravity combined with a 920 pound bulbed keel and ballasted centerboard ensure a safe, comfortable sail. Naval architect Joel White of Brooklin, Maine, sought to design a very simple boat that offers “good speed, comfortable seating for four and good looks.” A properly designed daysailer, says White, “gives the maximum in boating pleasure for dollars spent.” The Sakonnet’s shoal draft of 22 inches, with the centerboard up, makes her well suited for gunkholing and beaching. Her narrow beam and shallow keel make trailering easy at the end of the sailing season. The Sakonnet’s uncluttered deckplan is equally simple. The main and jib halyards run through rope clutches to a winch aft of the mast; the jib sheets lead back to port and starboard winches and cam cleats. The centerboard trunk barely rises above the floorboards. And, with just enough teak trim to accent her low, distinctive lines, the Sakonnet requires little maintenance. Like all of Edey & Duff’s boats, the Sakonnet is built one boat at a time, ensuring exceptional craftsmanship, attention to detail and the best materials in every boat. The Sakonnet’s foam-cored hull is constructed of hand-laid unidirectional E-glass and polyester resin. This makes an extremely stiff and light boat. And, with additional foam under the decks, The Sakonnet is virtually unsinkable. Storage is found under the aft deck. The permanently mounted bilge pump is next to the helm, and the teak floorboards can be removed for washing the bilge. The large, uncluttered cockpit features drains on both sides of the centerboard trunk, and the integral fiberglass liner makes the Sakonnet easy to clean and maintain. Storage under the foredeck offers plenty of storage for sails and gear.
