Yamaha F40 Won't go into Reverse

I have a 2003 40hp 4 stroke Yamaha which I had trouble getting the lower unit off to do an impeller change. I did pry it a little after I removed the 7 bolts until I figured it was the shift linkage which needed to be disconnected.
After I replaced the impeller and put the shifter and the shift linkage into neutral I replaced the lower unit. I started the motor and got the stream indicating the new impeller was working right. I tried forward and it was fine however it wouldn't shift into reverse (the lever wouldn't even shift to reverse). I disconnected the shift cable and tried to shift into reverse with the lever next to the powerhead but it wouldn't budge from neutral to go into reverse.
I removed the lower unit again and placed it on my workbench. The shift cam (the shift rod coming out of the lower unit) would go from forward to neutral but wouldn't budge going from neutral to reverse. With the lower unit out the shift lever by the powerhead works fine in all positions.

Did I pull the shift cam out too far when I tried to get the lower unit off the first time? If I push downward on the shift cam and turn the drive shaft by hand it starts to click and the prop does move in reverse but there is no torque and the shift rod will not stay after I relieve the pressure on it.
I ordered a service manual and will attempt to fix this myself (I can regear auto differentals and have the tools/indicators) but I wanted to know if anyone has encountered this before and have another fix.
Thanks for any help.

Re: Yamaha F40 Won't go into Reverse

that year F40 was a mercury marine design. I really cant think of anything that you did. usually if the cam gets pulled away from the follower, prop shaft removal is required to reset it.
hardest part about it is removing the propshaft bearing carrier if its a saltwater motor.
thats about the only special tools needed is a way to pull the carrier without destroying it.
oxy/acetylene works well in my area :).
but yes now you have isolated it to the case, time for dissasembly and careful inspection.
