when I tried to take flywheel off today, I broke one tooth of the flywheel by gear puller, is this going to be ok? can I still use this flywheel or I have to get another one?
is this going to be out of balance during running?

thanks, guys. (I still could not take it off with the harmonic balance puller)

what engine and year. if it was me i would put it back together. 1 tooth isn't that big of a deal. the starter might skip a bit but i don't think you will even be able to notice. i think it will be ok as long as it isn't a huge chunk. i always use a flywheel puller to do mine. the harmonic balance puller usually works well. they sometimes need to be left on over night or given a few motivational taps with a hammer.

thanks, 04.

it is 1977 55hp Johnson. the piece is not too big, I am worrying about flywheel out of balance during running.

I will try to put the puller overnight then,,not today, I am so frustrated now..

What kind of puller are you using? If its a 3 jaw pulley puller you will probably break more teeth before your done.

Anyone handy with a mig should be able to give you a new tooth...

all you can do it try it, i think it is going to effect starting.
wrong puller,
PULLING FLYWHEEL

you need a harmonic balancer puller, you need 3 - #8 harden bolts, that fit the 3 holes in your flywheel. standard hardware store bolts will strip out, causing more problems. loosen the flywheel nut, leaving it on so it protects the thread. thread the bolts in 7/16 of an inch. then tighten the puller, adjust so it has a straight pull. now tighten the puller, rap the center bolt with a hammer, then tighten some more. you may have to let it sit over nite, and repeat in the morning. this is a compression fitting, it will eventually POP!!. do not loose the woodruff key that goes in the groove of the flywheel and the crank shaft. then installing the flywheel, it has to be totally clean, no oil, woodruff key in place. then torque the nut to the specifications for your particular motor. if you do not do this, the woodruff key with shear, and you will be repeating these steps.

You should fix it if at all possible. Quick weld job and hand re-profile of the tooth to match the others. Careful though as too much heat will distort the flywheel then you will need a new one.
Harmonic puller is the only way to go to get them off. I usually apply WD40 or similar and let it sit overnight before putting the puller on. Don't know if it soaks through or not but it will not do any harm.

Re: lost a tooth today

thanks, guys.

I did my homework before I started in this forum, and found the "harmonic balance puller", then I went to Harbor Freight, two guys were in the shop, one dose not have any idea, the other one gave me a three jaw gear puller which chipped my flywheel later. after this, I did more search, and saw the picture of balance puller, so I bought a harmonic puller and three grade 8 bolts eventurely although the damage had been made.

the DVA adapter has arrived, so I will go to the lake to check the voltage from stator and timer base sensor, if there are bad and have to be replaced, I have to take the flywheel off anyway.

I put a wtb in craigslist,, and several people replied, I can get a used one for 50 bucks if I have to...

btw, the motor dose not have high spd, running fine at low spd (I can get 15 mph, with a 16ft glasstron trihull) new fuel tank, line, and filter, carb has been cleaned three times, new spark plug (good sparks). when I put it to full throttle, the motor bog down a little bit to about 10-12 mph, and when I take the throttle back a little bit, it will ran just fine.

now I was told the power pack, stator, and timer base sensor are bad. I checked all the resistance, they are fine, now I am going to check voltage with DVA.

any comments? thanks.

Re: lost a tooth today

I doubt that they are all bad. You are on the right track by testing them with a DVA. Resistance checks are not always definite. The CD pack is easy to test. Give it what it needs: charge voltage, trigger voltage, no kill and good connections. If it has all that and doesn't function, pitch it....
