Hey guys a newb here. First i would like to say thanks for all the info and questions that have been posted on this forum. I have obtained and used alot of information from here by simply searching for it but now my problem has become a bit unique i think.
I have a 48 horse johnson that is on a pontoon that has been sitting for a very long time. I drug it out this year dusted it off and put fresh fuel in it and a hot battery, knowing that the carbs would be gummed up i put some muffs on it and of course it ran rough. Bought rebuild kits for it and rebuilt the carbs. Took it to a lake 1/2 mile up the road took it for a spin and it ran like a champ! Ran it for only bout 10mins. The following week i took it to the big river, unloaded it and didnt make it 1/4 mile up river and the impeller came apart and the engine got hot, very hot! Got it home and ran a compression test on it and got 95psi on the bottom hole and 50 on the top. Theres some good news! Went to the local boat shop and got a head gasket, cover gasket, thermostat and new impeller. While i was there i resurfaced the head myself with there belt sander and i was a little concerned about how much material it took to get it flat again. Got it home got everything put together and done another compression test and got 145psi on both holes. Got it fired up and now it runs real rough and occasionally pops out of the carbs. It also blows a little bit of raw fuel out of the carbs while its running and the plugs are very wet(fuel). Im somewhat confident that its not a carb problem. Could it just simply have too much compression now that i resurfaced the head?
I apologize for the long post and any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

If you have Fuel spitting OUT of the carb, I would question the reed valves, maybe something holding a valve open.

Havent checked the reeds? Is it possible that it could be blowing compression past the intake valve due to the high compression level or is 145psi within specs?

I have never seen listed compression specs on engines.
If you have a broken, cracked or a reed held off the seat, it will blow fuel back at any compression level.

10 4. Will bad reeds make fuel blow out of both cabs? Although i have done the work that i have done, im still no boat mechanic:confused:. That being said where are the reeds located? Lol!

You have a set of reed valves for each carb, located in the intake manifold behind the carbs. It is possiable to see them if you remove the carbs and look in the manifold, but you might not be able to inspect them properly without removing them.
Go to the johnson website, punch in the year and model and look at the parts breakdown for your engine.

Will do. I guess you are speaking of the factory website? Could it be possible to clean that area with carb cleaner and compressed air?
