Hello all,

I recently bought a 1995 18.5 Bayline Capri 185. I am having trouble getting the boat to plane. It idles fine, I'll give it about a 1/4 throttle and again it does fine. When I give it full throttle the engine bogs down, and goes no faster than 1/4 throttle. With the boat out of the water or in nuetral the engine revs fine. I've even gone as far as to put the stern drive in gear out of the water again it seems to do fine.
The original owner put a planing fin on the outdrive, so I don't know if this could be the problem. I know he has replaced the propellor atleast once, but am not sure if it is the right size or type. Can anyone please help me out? I would appreciate any suggestions. Thanks

Re: Please advise

it could be a variety of different things. #1 you need to get a manual also
there is a sticky at the top of the forum to get u off troubleshooting.
Have you done a tune up on it? how old is the gas ....is the timing set corrrectly and the list goes on http://forums.iboats.com/showthread.php?t=342393

What size prop is on now, including pitch. Next, could the prop be bad. Check it out.

Re: Please advise

I do have a manual and so far this is what I've done.

Drained and refilled the fuel tank with good fuel, changed the coil, distributor cap, plugs, wires and ignition module. The accellerator pump in carb seems to be operating fine and the plate is fully opening at WOT. I tried checking timing with light, but can not get a good visual on the timing mark on crank shaft pulley. I've timed as best as I could by ear.

I don't know the prop pitch, do you know how to check that?

I appreciate everyones ideas and advice, and would appreciate as much help as I can get.

Ayuh,... Let's start with the Basics,..... What motor,..?? What drive,..??

Clean the timing marks, 'n put a paint line on 'em, so you can see them...
Timing by Ear, is never good enough...

The prop has #s stamped on it Somewhere,... Try under the Nut...

Re: Please advise

I just want to say that I took a little of everyone's much appreciated advice and tooled around with my boat. Saturday I put her in the water, and man she took off!!!! She's running great now! Had to readjust idle after timing was set, and I think I have to adjust my hand throttle as WOT is pushing about 300 RPMs over max, but other than that, she's off and running.

I want to thank all that gave me their advice...

You should see it on the prop barrel. You may have to pull it to see it. A 2 minute job.
