Hey Everyone, hoping for some help from you more experienced folk.
I just replaced my control cables on my 70 hp outboard. I replaced the shifter cable and the throttle cable. I thought I followed my steps back and put it back together the same as it was before.

After I was finished I went to start the motor, it started just fine but as soon as it starts it sounds like it is at the highest rpm and I didn't even touch the throttle lever on the control box. Did I hook it up wrong? DO I need to disconnect the throttle cable and maybe loosen something?

I also replaced spark plugs not sure if that could cause any issues like this.
Any help is greatly appreciated. Thank you so much!

You did adjust the plastic nuts at the motor end of the cables---didn't you?

I did not! First time doing this so I learn as I go. I asked the guy at the marine store if anything needed to be adjusted and he said no :mad-new: Is this at the end of the cable the black part?

A " marine store " or a qualified dealer with a little more knowledge ?----You need to adjust the anchor point so that the throttle cable pulls it to the idle stop.----The throttle and shift cable are identical so there is no way they are a " plug and play " item.----They both need to be adjusted on your motor.

Well it’s more of a marine store, they do have their own shop and all the guy seemed to know what he was talking about. Should’ve known better. My fault. The anchor point I’m assumimg is the black circle part on the cables. How are they adjusted? Sorry I know I’m asking dumb questions...

You could look at the old cable to see where they were.-----Or you take the cables off the motor.-----Set arm on motor to full forward.--Put lever on box in full forward.----Adjust cable to just slip in the anchor point.----Set throttle arm on the motor to lowest idle and put control box lever in neutral.------Adjust so cable just slips in the anchor point.
