Im going to replace the water pump in my motor this Saturday and need some clarification before I get started.
1994 Evinrude 140
How do I disconnect the shift linkage?
The only water pump I've ever done was a 1980 OMC 35hp
Thank you

just disconnect the cross pin holding the shift rod near the PH (on the side)

models vary .. do not turn (unscrew or screw the shift rod.. keep it aligned when replacing

A service manual is in order. It will explain exactly how to do it, what adhesives, greases and permatex products will substitute for the OMC products cited.

Also, you may need to do other repairs, and most shops will not want to work on that old an engine.

I replaced the water pump and got everything put back together. The water stream at the tattletale/telltale is very weak. But the motor seems to be getting water. Even letting it run at a fast idle on the water hose, the cylinder heads are cool to touch, even after 30 minutes.
Ideas?

these use a LOW pressure pump. combined with the anti-siphon water pan sucker 9000, they usually just dribble out at idle. the ONLY thing that matters is cyl head temp at idle in the water. the flat spot TOP of each head must be 125-155f ! people obsess over the indicator flow but that means diddly squat other than line is clear to a working pump. you could stuff a screw in it and it would just cool better.
