Help Getting Boat on EZLoader Trailer

The rollers/bunks are there to guide the boat onto the trailer. Too deep and they don't do that. Most times when the rollers or bunks are too deep, the boat doesn't load straight. In extreme cases the boat could fall off the trailer. If the rollers/bunks are too shallow, the worst that can...

89 Mercury outboard 100 hp shift shaft alignment

The driveshaft will align first. That should be easy if someone turns the flywheel. Remember to grease the splines. If you can tilt the motor up, it makes the gearcase lighter. The shift shaft is another matter. I often need to grab the shift shaft with a needlenose plier and move it into...

    No sparking v4

On my '98 Johnny OB, the boat harness was melted where it plugged into the engine harness. I am not sure where the short was, but the short caused the wires to melt at that point. I also found melted wires under the dashboard. In general, look for places that the wires need to bend. That is...

    Controls Suzuki

The steering cable and fuel lines should interchange. As for the throttle and shift cables, I am not sure. Mercs push the throttle closed while Johnnyrudes pull the throttle open. Both of those pull the shift cable for forward and push for reverse, but have different throws. I have not...

    2000 Johnson J90PLSSE LU identification

On my '98 Johnny 150HPV6, the air silencer has 2 connections to the recirculation system. The vapor pump has a tee and the two hoses go to the upper silencer and upper main bearing vent, respectively. The port balance tube is connected to the lower part of the silencer. Does that help?

A prop question (enertia or other versus older props)

Props with more rake tend to be higher performance. However, a lot depends on the hull and power-to-weight ratio. Some hulls can only go so fast, regardless of power. Usually, you need to be able to trim the motor, lifting the bow to gain speed. Some boats trim up more than others. My old...

    Leaf Spring Shackle Question

You can put the axle under the spring, to give more clearance. A lot of trailers (including mine) do it that way. My springs even have a dimple that locates the spring onto the axle. The plate then goes on top of the axle. Some axles have a bolt or rivet thru the center of the leaves. It...

    Mercury Trim Tilt Sticks

A lot of PTT systems have a stop (trim limit) switch when it is fully tilted. If yours has that feature, you could adjust is down a bit and see if that helps. I had that issue on an older Merc. The solution was when she would not trim down, hit the trip up button for 1/2 sec and then...

How to choose an old 2-stroke 150/175 Merc

I think (think) all the 175HP motors used the larger gearcases. I think the XR4 was the only V6 with the smaller gearcase. The advantage of today's modular props is that one can switch props between engine brands with the purchase of a new hub kit, provided the props share a hub size. I have...

Need help finding part number for trim switch J50PLSNF

Here is one parts list for a control for your motor, Not sure if it is the right one. See part #69 https://www.boats.net/catalog/johnson/rigging-parts-accessories/2001-2004/remote-controls-and-cables-2001-2004/remote-control-binnacle-single-lever-2001-2004 There are other controls listed as...

Gas - Oil Mixture on old Evinrudes outboards

OMC motors before 1964 often had sleeve bearings, versus roller bearings. Sleeve bearings need more lubrication, hence the 24::1 recommendation for all OMC motors before 1964. As for the 100::1 gas/oil mix, the drawback was loss of crankcase rust control, with so little oil in the fuel. I...

    Throttle control

That is the cold start lever. To start a carb motor, pull it up, hold the choke button (in your case, push the key in to choke) and crank the motor until she starts. As she warms up, lower the lever. The lever must be all the way down to use the throttle lever to accelerate the motor.

Need help finding part number for trim switch J50PLSNF

Look on the accessories listing for a control like yours, on that year motor, on crowleymarine or equivalent. I had the same issue some years ago, and it was difficult to get the part number, but I eventually found it. Once I had the P/N, the replacement switch was easy to buy.

How to choose an old 2-stroke 150/175 Merc

One more thing. Some of the older 150HPV6 motors have the smaller diameter gearcase. I believe they are D/C by now. You likely want the larger diameter gearcase as I believe them to be more robust. Prop selection is also better as most of the 150HP and larger motors of all brands use it.

How to choose an old 2-stroke 150/175 Merc

First of all, you want a V6 engine. The inline 6 engines are just too old and while a lot lighter, do not have the low end power of the V6. The V6 engines have not changed a lot in mechanical design since introduced and are a proven design. If you buy a motor older than 10 years, your...
