DIY How to build an outboard stand with a 275lbs+ rating

I built several stands over the years which are quite similar to yours. I would be a bit concerned about side-to-side stability, as the motors are real top heavy. I screwed a side-to-side 2x4, front and back to alleviate this issue. Raise it up off the floor a bit to allow the casters to do...

Restoring a trailer vs replacing a trailer

Usually if you have someone walk next to the bearing as you move the trailer, they can hear the crunching. In this case, it makes sense to install all new wheel bearings, I would think. It is a PIA, but not expensive and worth the peace of mind.

    Tilt Tube maintenance

If you have one of those fittings on the steering rod end that wipes the grease off, remove it, run the cable all the way out, and wipe it off. Now regrease with marine grease or Quicksilver special lube 101, which is made specifically for steering rod. Now run the steering thru it's travel...

    Re-powering a 1978 21' Starcraft Mariner - Engine Help!

The only thing I can think of is to get a newer 4 cycle/DI motor with near the same HP, but fewer cylinders. Your current motor is a 4cyl, with about the max HP that could be had. It will be hard to match that power/weight ratio. The brand new motors are all 350#+ for much less HP than you...

Removal of Flex Seal coating from hull?

Do you think the flex seal was put on to seal rivets? There are a lot of aluminum boats out there. Why take on such a headache?

    Exhaust leak 1989 Merc 60hp

You will want to source the mounts and bolts before taking anything apart. The mounts look to be hard to get.

    1960/70 Sears outboard

My old Sears (mid 70's) outboard was made by Eska. The fuel pump was a small balloon-like thing that sat in a passage in the intake manifold, under the carb. The crankcase pressure filled and emptied the balloon to pump fuel to the carb.

    Exhaust leak 1989 Merc 60hp

Engine mounts do not have anything to do with exhaust leaks. They may be bad, but it is unrelated to the exhaust leak. Service manuals only devote a few pages to the midsection, as those repairs are relatively rare. Push and pull on the powerhead and see how much movement is in the mounts...

Surprise My electric car is not charged.

So your saying that since 8/10 biggest floods occurred before 1976, we do not have sea level rise? Those two items are not related. Also, loosing beach sand has nothing to do with sea level rise or fall. The Jettys on the beach help with that. A lot of people deny science, in this day and...

    Exhaust leak 1989 Merc 60hp

Gee, pulling the powerhead and replacing the gasket takes a couple of hours. It is now April. Why wait 6 months?

    Exhaust leak 1989 Merc 60hp

Likely a leaky powerhead base gasket. It should be fine to use, provided the exhaust doesn't get under the cowling.

2000 Johnson outboard throttle control hanging

Look for a set screw on the bottom of the handle. You may need to put it into 3/4 throttle in reverse to get to the set screw. Also, pull/slide off the plate with the ridges. You should find some wood screws and some machine screws connecting to the back (guts) of the shifter. Clean and...

4.3lx power steering fluid cooler replacement

As was said, if she leaks into the bilge, the lines are likely bad. I had to replace the PS lines in my MerCruiser. The metal fittings were zinc plated and rusted out.

4.3lx power steering fluid cooler replacement

If the PS cooler leaks internally, the PS fluid will leak into the water. You may or may not see it. I would pull it and test it with some pressure.

    Stern Drive Mystery

Engines will rev up just fine in neutral, with dead cylinders, partially clogged filters and antisiphon valves, bad spark advance, bad spark plug wires etc. Neutral testing RPM is meaningless, as it requires little power.

    Mercury 115 Tachometer Problem

Yes, the grey wire is the same as either of the yellow wires. They just pull it thru for convenience. I would not think that the regulator could be good, and the grey wire not putting out the tach signal, however, if that happens, you can substitute either of the yellow wires to get a signal...

Advice for Portable Fuel Tank Mercury 115hp Command Thrust

Gee, any type of marine fuel tank should work. If using a portable tank on a larger motor, get the largest you can handle, say 12Gal. If you use a quick connect fitting, you need the correct type. On a 115HP motor with a built in tank, I would directly connect the fuel line, and use 3/8"...

    96 j150exedb. Water pump

The drive wedge must be wedged (locked) against the impeller in order to drive it. So grab the impeller, and turn the driveshaft CW to lock it. The wedge is just a solid piece of plastic. If it is not locked, I would think it could be damaged, and the impeller slip. Also, make sure you use...

Surprise My electric car is not charged.

Gee, I am not sure what those attachments show. What I can say is that the water level in Barnegat Bay, NJ has risen quite a bit in the last 30 years. We now seem to get about 4 or 5 floods a year. 10 years ago it was half of that. 30 years ago, we had hardly any floods.

    Starved for fuel

Depending on year, MerCruisers had mechanical or electric fuel pumps. What do you have? They normally do not have primer bulbs.
