Out to lunch Gear Oil Prices

Gee, a check of wallyworld shows the super tech gear oil less than $7/qt, and Quicksilver in the $25/gt range. That trend seems to hold for 2 cycle oil as well, although the Pennzoil brand is nearly as cheap as the super tech.

Service Manual 1984 90 HP Mercury

A Mercury service manual is best. I do not have a link to one, for that old of a motor. See if you can buy one on fleabay. I would expect that motor to be a six cylinder inline motor, with 3 carbs and six coils. The inline six motors up until 1979 1/2 had distributor ignitions and a single...

    1959 Evinrude Lark Kill Switch

So Jim, "The only possible way to shut it off is to retard the throttle or pull the fuel line. " from your post #8 actually means that it can be done electrically? Glad that is cleared up.

    Long shaft motors

Lower HP motors generally get put on smaller boats. Smaller boats usually have a shorter transom height. Some smaller motors are used as sailboat aux power. These often have long shafts, so they can reach the water easier. Does that get it?

    115 Crossflow Stripped Important Bolt

See if you can use a slightly longer bolt. There may be enough threads to hold. If not you will need to drill and retap for a solid or helicoil insert.

    1959 Evinrude Lark Kill Switch

Gee, Jim, can you not kill the spark like on a 50's lawnmower? Remember the bent piece of metal bolted to the head with the spike that penetrated and shorted the spark plug?

    1988 Johnson GT150 acceleration issues

Does the linkage to the carbs and trigger move to WOT? If you pump the primer bulb, does she then accelerate?

    Can't remove 5.7 vertically.

Gee, can you build a dolly to fit under the engine. Pry the engine up, shove the dolly under it and roll it forward until it clears the structure, and then pull with a cum-a-long and scaffold? Of course, if you have a C frame lying around.....

    2004 Evinrude 115

I was just pointing out that the complexities of both engines are significant and the OP's fear of an eTEC should apply to the 4 cycle motor as well. The 4 cycle Yammies are real popular around here. They run great, however, I do not know of anyone who has one that takes off the cowling to do...

    Mercury red band 1150

1973 4/6 cyl Merc ign components will interchange with your '77 IL6. Maybe even a 1972 IL 4/6, but you will need to look at the redband and see what it has. Those older Mercs had the orange coil and the big rectifier with the 3 colors on it. The switchbox was identical, and I think that is...

    2004 Evinrude 115

Gee, isn't the 4 stroker just as complex as a 2 cycle DI motor? Don't they both have computer control, plus tons of sensors, just like a modern auto engine? It is not a B&S lawnmower.

    wet slip dry dock option

Gee, that would last for one storm here, and then be shredded. Also, it would collect barnacles, which would rip holes in the liner as a minimum and likely puncture the inflatable portion. Folks have the hard plastic float on type devices for their boats. These are the big brother of the...

Mercury tower of power 115 cables

Cables for throttle and shifting are readily available at most marine stores, as well as Mercury dealers. I would expect them on amazon as well. There are instructions on how to measure them for length. Steering cables alone may not be available, as the companies like to sell complete...

    100hp lower end replacement

Replacement Gearcase? See if SEI makes one for your model. They would be brand new, at a good price.

    good morning :)

Most boat maintenance is part of the winterization procedure. When you winterize you change the oil, grease everything, stabilize the fuel, etc. Getting the boat ready for the water in the spring, is usually pretty easy, if winterization is done properly. There is a winterization "stickie" in...

    good morning :)

Gee, I think it depends on the kind of boat. A 16 footer with an OB has little maintenance. A 30 footer with twin mercruisers, a head, a/c, sink, hot water etc, has much more maintenance.

    Would you?

The JEEP is 4WD? The ramp is paved? If yes, traction should be fine, and towing should be fine. Is the hitch rated for the weight of the boat+trailer?

Gee, what pitch prop? Does she trim up, or plow water when trimmed?

    2003 Johnson 90hp (J90GLSTA)

Air leaks into the gasoline side of the fuel system (at the main strainer, water separator, fittings, etc) cause the OMS pump to overpump oil causing heavy smoking. You might check that prior to buying a new pump. Thermostats do not last forever and can get debris in them. Obviously...

    Outboard Ignition Switch Wiring

Some will argue, but the best electrical connection is a soldered one. That was how my '77 Merc ign switch was wired, and it lasted until I retired the control in 2021, but was still good at that time. I used/kept the boat in salt water, so I consider it to be a severe test of the solder...
