    A lot of OEM types were Riveted, they also look like a bunch of Stacked Fins. Others like Holley do use a Mesh.

    It is not a Filter. It is there to absorb the Heat from any Flame from a Backfire, to remove that a source of Ignition of any Gasoline Vapours in the Engine Compartment. That might be why they are not replaceable Media
