    1975 9.9 sea horse

Turning the Throttle down, retards the timing, which is how the Idle Speed is set. If retarded too much the engine will die. The carb, is fully closed at idle. 1 1/2 turns out from lightly seated is where the Idle Mixture Screw, is initially set, and is adjusted once the engine warms. Final...

    . . . and I Thought Hi-tech Boat Engines Were Bad . . .

The moment I got a Car with a Computer Controlled Engine(86 Cadillac Fleetwood Brougham), I threw in the Towel when it came to Diagnosing, engine, and later, any Drivetrain issues. I have able to deduce failed O2 sensors, when the Code said Running Lean, but the Exhaust looked like a Diesel...

    Prop Question

"It’s 6700 up on top But I expect to lose some RPM by the time it gets to the shaft ." "By the 15 HP 1984 Johnson manual it’s a 7000 at the top ! At the shaft it drops down to like 6200 if my memory serves me correct with factory 10 pitch." An 800 drop in Rpm? Maybe this particular engine has a...

Need guidance on Prop pitch and Power, 78 Johnson 55hp 55EL78S

If it is cutting out, the Solution is finding the Problem and fixing it. As for adjusting the Carbs for altitude, a 78 55hp, has Fixed Hi and Low Speed Jets, and doesn't appear to offer any choices for altitude. The Carbs do use different sized Jets between the Upper and Lower Carbs, depending...

JB Weld? Nail Polish, or any Fuel resistant Sealer would have worked, and would permit future removal. Those Plugs, usually seal well, when they are Flattened upon installation, even without Sealer.

1994 Force 120 Low compression on top cylinder

Was it a Shop that did the Rebuild, or just some guy who said he he could? Was whatever what caused the First Failure, fixed? If not, the rebuild was on borrowed Time from the start?

    KIA Telluride for towing?

It is so beautiful there, except for the Humidity. Last time I was in the Van Area was in 2015, I was in Richmond for a Convention. Met and photographed John Horgan there

Everything done but low rpm at WOT. Distributor spring?

Just to see if the shaft was moving to open the Secondaries, I would place it where movement would cause it to slide down the Shaft, as the Actuator moved upwards. Some quick scans from Prints. August 16, 1986.

Need guidance on Prop pitch and Power, 78 Johnson 55hp 55EL78S

It might be firing on both at low speed, but as the engine is speeded up, and the Load increases, and just before a boat gets on Plane, the loads are the Highest they will get, the engine may lose a Cylinder, cause at that point the Voltage required to fire the Spark Plug is way higher than at...

Everything done but low rpm at WOT. Distributor spring?

I always say to leave the Wife, Kids, and Mother-in-law, especially the MIL, ashore. Girlfriends and Mistresses, however are allowed aboard. I don't think a bigger carb is going to fix it. You have an 1850 on there. Are the secondaries opening? I used to fit a clip to the Secondary Actuator Rod...

Welcome Fellow Canuk When you mention "Advancing the Timing" I will assume you are referring to Cam Timing. If the Cam Timing is indeed retarded/late, advancing it will certainly help low end and mid range torque, and would likely raise the Intake Manifold Vacuum. First thing would be to check...

    Outboard flooding issues

Welcome to iboats If the Diaphragm is ruptured, gas can end up in the Crankcase, making that cylinder run rich. Hopefully what Fuel was getting to the Crankcase via the Pulse Hose, was already mixed with Oil, if not... Do a compression check

1972 Mercury 402 lower unit off but stuck in forward

Basically the shift Shaft is rotating the Cam, which pushes the Cam Follower in, moving the Clutch Dog. When there is no/little contact between the 2, the unit is in forward. Looking at the Cam you can see it can be rotated a fair bit in the wrong direction(no shift action) with little/no...

1990 V4 runs on two cylinders at low RPMs

The Carb Kit should have those 2 silver discs #2, You need to remove the old ones to get any crap out of the passages. Your carb has fixed Jets for both High and Low Speed. Float Height needs to be checked and adjusted too
