    battery charger alternative

If your motor is an inline 6, the max charge is likely 9A at high RPM. If a newer motor, it could have a 35 or 40Amp charging system. If a motor can charge 35 or 40Amps, you may get some charge into the trolling batteries, from the engine.

Add telltale pee hole to 1965 Johnson 75 HP

Gee, you said you would improve it, I asked how. I am an engineer. Engineering is the process of solving a problem. I have not seen anything from you that solves the problem. I also managed lots of engineers. Practical answers to problems are welcome. Impractical answers are advertising or...

Add telltale pee hole to 1965 Johnson 75 HP

OK, I'll bite. What changes would you make to the overheat circuit to make it robust? Remember it needs to be cheap.

    Anyone got any dynamite

Sounds like you have the wrong wire from the switchbox, on the #1 coil, or the wrong trigger wire firing the #1 coil. You might recheck all the wiring. The maxrules web site may have a wiring diagram for you.

    Mercury 50hp 1986 CDI

Gee, how about this one...It has 8+ 5 connections. Real cheap, so likely some Chinese part, but there are so many to choose from. https://www.amazon.com/332-5772A1-332-5772A2-332-5772A3-332-5772A4-332-5772A5/dp/B07CBXVWS6 Of course, you could go on the maxrules site with your serial number...

Mercruiser 3.0L Overheated What to Look Out For?

Although I do not know if the 3.0l was ever used in a car, it is the same basic design as many that were used in cars, like the 4.3L V6 which is the v6 version of the venerable small block chevy 283 CID V8 used in the '56 and newer Chevys. They are pretty tough motors due to their cast iron...

How to Winterize a 1989 Mercury 175hp VRO removed.

Simple stuff. Should be the same as your Force motor, I would think. Add fuel stabilizer to fuel supply in proper ratio. Run motor in barrel or on flusher device at idle for a few minutes to get stabilized fuel into carbs. Spray fogging oil into each carb throat, and try to stall motor...

    Mercury 50hp 1986 CDI

Are you talking about the switchbox, trigger, stator or what? A 1986 motor would have 4 coils, and a single switchbox. What do you have?

Adding ignition kill switch and lanyard 96 Johnson 88

One more thing. Your OB needs the kill switch to connect the two wires, when the lanyard is pulled. Some kill switches disconnect the wires when the lanyard is pulled, and some have both functions in one switch, and you get to choose which function you want to use.

Mercruiser 3.0L Overheated What to Look Out For?

Gee, check the stuff Scott mentioned, replace the impeller and test the motor. We had 195* thermostats in our cars in the 70's, so if it really was just 200*, it may be fine. When you replace the impeller, replace the wearplatee and two gaskets. Inspect the pump base for melting, and the pump...

Please help trying to check timing

I remove spark plugs 2-6, so the motor will not start, as I need to set idle pickup timing and full throttle timing. I do not see any advantage to removing spark plug #1, as you still need a source of ground to make the timing light pick up the spark.

Adding ignition kill switch and lanyard 96 Johnson 88

Is your current ign switch on the dashboard? If so, connect the kill switch to the black and black/yellow (or black/white) wires, on the ign switch. Find a place the the kill switch to be mounted, and you are done. If you have a control with the ign switch mounted in it, it is the same...

Fuel water separator and fuel filter on 3L

Gee, I leave my boat in the salt water from May to November, and never have more than a tablespoon of water in the separator when I winterize it. The tank is 63G.

    Anyone got any dynamite

With all that new stuff, maybe old wiring is bad? You did connect the banded stator and trigger wires to the same switchbox?

    Impeller replacement

I have that motor and have done many impeller changes. First off, replace the impeller, wearplate and the 2 gaskets that sandwich it, as a minimum. Check the upper pump SS cup for scratches. Replace if you find them. Check the pump base for melting, if so, replace it. If you are getting...

Stern Drive, Trilux and Prevale Sprayer

You will get much better anti fouling protection if you brush (2 coats) on the trilux. Spraying is easy and looks nice, but the coverage is thin.

Fuel water separator and fuel filter on 3L

IMO, the clear racor filters do not give sufficient extra value to justify the additional cost. Plus, I seem to remember one of the plastic bowls was ruined by the sun, and leaked fuel.

Fuel water separator and fuel filter on 3L

Gee, in post 29 you complain about water in the fuel when you fill up. In post 33 you say the rain got into the tank. You have confused me.

Lower unit oil -- water or not?

Water is present, IMO. Let the mix settle and it might separate.

Adding ignition kill switch and lanyard 96 Johnson 88

If you do need to add a separate ign kill switch, just splice it into the black and black/white wires. To kill the ign, they need to be connected together. My OEM harness uses bullet connectors to connect to the ign switch. I would simply use some of those to make some "Y"s to splice in the...
