Out to lunch Gear Oil Prices

Gee, better to change it too often, than not often enough. After each season is a good interval. I asked a friend of mine when he last changed the gear oil in his merc 850. His reply was "What gear oil?". We came home in reverse that day, as forward wouldn't engage. That gearcase had many...

    1999 Force/Merc 75HP 3 Cylinder 2-Stoke Rough Running Issues

Just so you know, 2000RPM is about where the idle jets stop providing any significant fuel, and the mains take over completely. If it were me, I would pull the bowl off and clean the emulsion tube from below, and hopefully that will get the passages under the welch plug. I have not worked on...

    1963 Mercury 350

Normally props have a thrust washer under the prop to keep it from hitting the gearcase. It appears that you need one.

Out to lunch Gear Oil Prices

Gee, If you dislike the price of your favorite gear oil, give Wallyworld the $6.96 for the SuperTech marine gear oil and move on. It will work just fine.

Out to lunch Gear Oil Prices

Gee, I used the Wallyworld stuff in my gearcases for years. I bought a gallon of synthetic blend gear oil on Amazon last year, for $30, just so I would have it on hand.

Gee, I checked the wallyworld gear oil a few hours ago, after I read post #1.

HOW TO FILL POWER TRIM ON 1982 50HP MARINER NO RESIVOR ON PUMP INSIDE OF BOAT CYLINDERS ON EACH SIDE OF MOTOR

If the pump is like the picture in post #7, the pump is self-bleeding. just fill it with ATF or 5W-30 motor oil, whatever it already has in it. The trim cylinders are not self-bleeding, however. Give a pull on the gearcase and see if she moves a bit. If so, they must be bled.

Mercury 35 HP Reverse Locking Cam

I really don't know. My Mercs of that era were PTT. But a friend of mine had a '73 850. He always cursed when he wanted to pull the boat onto the beach. The motor was in neutral and off, but the motor was locked down.

    1999 Force/Merc 75HP 3 Cylinder 2-Stoke Rough Running Issues

That plug is listed as a welch plug. They are convex and when replaced are normally pressed (or tapped) flat and sealed with wife's nail polish or RTV silicone. Getting them out usually damages them. That looks like it covers the top of the emulsion tube. Maybe you can clean it from the bottom?

Staying warm on boat in the winter

Gee, 50*F is not real cold. How about a warm coat, gloves and long johns? I would expect an electric heater in the cockpit on low would work. Your alternator should put out 65A or 780watts, at cruise speed, somewhat less at idle.. A typical heater is no more than 1500watts, so setting it...

Mercury 35 HP Reverse Locking Cam

Those cams are supposed to lock the motor down in neutral and reverse, unlocked in forward. So if you are installing the gearcase in neutral, as you should, set the cam to engage the locking rod about 1/2 way up the cam.

    2000 Johnson J90PLSSE LU identification

My '98 Johnny has the plastic water grates that are removed with 2 screws. You might look for a part number, and see if it is a OMC brand and try to match it up. SEI likely makes new gearcases for your motor, and their prices are reasonable, so you might see if it is one of those. I think...

Can someone identify this rubber grommet?

That is a seal for one of the Deutch or Amphenol connectors of the motor wiring harness. You will have to disconnect each connector to see which one is missing it.

    Old School Two Lever Controls

I only saw the red switch in your picture. It looks like a neutral safety switch. The white wire on those old MerControls is often ign power. This is used for the choke solenoid. Ground is usually black. Starter solenoid is often yellow, choke is grey, ign killer for magnetos is orange or...

    74 Mercury 850 Tilt wiring

A lot of those trim limit switches broke 20 years ago. I just jumpered mine (connect the switch wires blue and purple) together, to eliminate the switch, as it needs to be closed to allow trim. The motor will them trim all the way up, unless you release the trim button. Most props will...

    Gas causes mold to form

Mixing bleach and ammonia is very bad, as it releases toxic fumes. Some sink dishwashing detergent has ammonia in it, so keep that in mind, if you want to mix it with bleach. Laundry detergent is formulated to mix safely with either bleach or ammonia, or other additives. I have not tried...

    Skeg Q

I have used marine poly putty to fix gouges in aluminum props. It is nearly invisible after sanding and painting and holds up pretty well. I expect it would work on skegs, as long as you don't hit anything.
