How is HP selected on old Elgin Outboards?

I saw a utube video where a guy ran a 1957 Elgin 12HP, in 5HP, 7.5HP and 12HP "modes". The selection of power was via a keyswitch on the motor. How is this accomplished? RPM limiter? Cylinder deactivation?

    1976 mercury 40hp flywheel question

Make sure the ring of small bolts around the large flywheel bolt are tight. Sometimes they need Loctite to stay that way.

Fuel water separator and fuel filter on 3L

If you have a lot of water in the fuel tank and the boat is trailered, you can usually pull the fuel gauge sender and stick one of those "shake-shake" Siphons in it. Put a piece of 1/2" copper on the free end of the siphon hose and stick it thru the garboard drain hole. Now use a funnel and...

Add telltale pee hole to 1965 Johnson 75 HP

You might paint the trailer, as it is pretty rotted.......The hull looks real nice.

    Nissan or Mercury?

Gee, even large 25 year old 2 cycle outboards do not foul plugs anymore. My '98 Johnny 150HPV6 (2 cycle oil injection) will troll all day w/o issue. Not sure what the issue is with your Honda.

Fuel water separator and fuel filter on 3L

You realize that water separators work by gravity, right? Fuel and water goes in the top of the separator, and the water settles to the bottom, as fuel is drawn from the top of the separator. The filter element does nothing to separate the water from the fuel. A water separator with no...

    Merc 75 4 cylinders, 2 carbs

Most Mercs have a piece of plastic that flips to release the throttle cable. The idle stop set screw is usually on the bottom of the throttle arm. You usually back it off to lower the idle and adjust the barrel on the throttle cable to push the throttle closed.

    Boat floor

The plywood will be sealed on all sides with poly resin, right? Why not overlap the seam with the vinyl? It will give a smooth look, if the seam is smooth.

Crack in cylinder wall, need insight....

Gee, I vote for welding it from the outside. Also, the crack was likely from overheat, so you must make sure that does not happen again. There are no ridges in the bore, right? Causes of overheat are lean fuel/air mix, water pump issues, thermostat issues, over advanced timing and poor fuel...

    Merc 75 4 cylinders, 2 carbs

The idle speed is controlled by the idle stop screw, on the throttle arm. Of course, the throttle cable pushes against the idle stop screw. So turn the idle stop screw to lower the idle speed. It will push against the throttle cable. If the push is too much, turn the barrel nut on the...

    yamaha 2013 waverunner

I believe those models have a self check like an auto OBD-II system. You hold the button on the bottom left of the dashboard down until the code appears. Hopefully the code is listed on the internet. Remember those WR motors have most of the components of a modern auto, like crank angle...

    Bought wrong prop

The spline length and position on the Merc and OMC are different. The splines should be the same size. The merc prop should fit on the OMC, but not go on all the way. I used a Mercrusier prop on my Johnnyrude outboard. I needed to drill out the splines nearest the inside of the prop to make...

    Merc 75 4 cylinders, 2 carbs

The only real synch necessary is to make sure the carbs open at the same time. There are adjustments on the bottom carb where the plastic linkage attaches. Set the throttle so the top carb to ready to open, but still closed, and then loosen the linkage on the bottom carb and set it the same...

    LU 1655-7332 Parts Diagram?

Shims go behind the gears to achieve correct tooth mesh. Too little will strip the gears, too much mesh will cause breakage of gears. Take a look at the crowleymarine site. Gearcases from IL 4/6 motors 1973 up to and including a'77 Merc inline 4/6 will fit your motor. Likely others will too...

    Enrichner valve

Of course, you could test it the old-fashioned way. Use a piece of wire to jumper from the positive battery cable on the starter solenoid to the enrichener connection. That will ensure the enrichener is getting +12VDC. If she doesn't work when you do that, either the enrichen is bad or the...
