    1988 60hp 2 stroke won't start Need help!

Yes, they were just pieces of heavy plastic, with some adjustment. I used a piece of sheet metal, but most anything that has some stiffness and will fit will work. Are you sure the outer flywheel is installed properly? It is easy to get it right.

    1988 60hp 2 stroke won't start Need help!

You can make a timing pointer. Something that bolts on and points to the flywheel and has some adjustment. A piece of sheet metal with a scribe mark works. Reed valves almost never go bad. If you truly have spark, get the timing close and she will run for many seconds on ether.

    Broken Skeg Tip...Repairable?

Props are a lot cheaper to wear down than gearcase skegs. So either pull the drive up (best) or repair it to protect the prop. I paid about $250 to repair a skeg, 15 years ago. That includes the replacement skeg and the welding. I pulled the gearcase myself.

    1988 60hp 2 stroke won't start Need help!

Gee, First pull the spark plugs and remove the prop. Now set the top cylinder to TDC using a screwdriver int eh spark plug hole. The timing pointer should read very close to TDC on the timing decal. If not, the outer flywheel is installed incorrectly. Next, stick a timing light on the #1...

    Big differences, same power?

OK, so the newer motors had 10% more displacement, and made the same power. That is not unusual. The 1977 Merc 90HP, 115HP and 150HP motors shared the same displacement, number of cylinders, num of carbs etc. My merc V6 has 25% more displacement than my Il6. but makes the same HP. Maybe...

    Sunbird boat antenna location

When I install a stereo in my boat, I put a 3-4' wire in the antenna port and toss the end of the wire into the bilge. Fiberglass boats do not shield the antenna, so no need to have a "real" antenna.

Need advice, 1996 125hp no spark now, won't start

CDI Electronics is a manufacturer of stators, switchboxes and other stuff. Their test procedures are designed to help you figure out which of their components you need to buy to fix your motor. As far as I know you only need a DVA to test your ign system. There are instructions on this forum...

Smokey Engine - Air/Fuel problem or Oil/Fuel problem?

Check the fuel pump diaphram for damage. A damaged diaphram allows raw fuel into the crankcase. This can cause lots of smoke.

1982 Mercury 90 HP Choke Question

Inline six right? There should be two plastic choke plates that close on the top two carbs.

1976 mercury 1150 115hp runs on muffs but not in lake

Make sure your starter is spinning at 300RPM or so, to help it choke up.

1976 mercury 1150 115hp runs on muffs but not in lake

No, as long the the primer bulb is hard, the carbs have fuel. Choke the crap out of her. Cold start lever high, hold choke button while cranking, until she fires. Hold choke for a bit and then feather it out, until she is warmed up. Make sure the voltage on the switchbox red and adjacent...

Prop Locking Question (Reverse Locking Cam?)

I have a good one from a '77 IL6, here on the Jersey shore. You were in Ca, right?

    New at this need help

I am pretty sure this is the one you need for a standard MerControl. If you visit a dealer, he will likely have one, or can get one. https://www.crowleymarine.com/mercury/products/54211t-switch-assy The solenoid wire, terminal "S", needs to be wired thru the neutral safety switch. The...

Prop Locking Question (Reverse Locking Cam?)

You could certainly get a bad gearcase on the cheap (maybe even free) and swap your stuff into it.

    New at this need help

The newer Merc compatible controls will work with your motor, with some modifications. The control cables for shift and throttle should work w/o any mods. You should be able to reuse your existing control cables with the new control. New wiring often comes with new controls and would usually...

    Broken Skeg Tip...Repairable?

Mercury used to make replacement skegs that could be welded on. You need to hire a good welder, who knows how to weld it w/o melting the seals, else you need to strip out the gears and seals. In your particular case, a skeg guard or some JB weld to smooth out the jagged stuff likely works.

    BOAT PUNK

There are a lot of symptoms that are well known to have specific causes. A gross example is a 70's inline Merc with water in the bottom cylinder. It is likely caused by bad crankshaft seals or a leaking exhaust component, either inner cover or baffle. It could in theory, be other things...

Prop Locking Question (Reverse Locking Cam?)

I cannot answer your question, however, the older Mercs like your 850 had the gearcase with the rounded skeg (your bottom picture). The sharp skeg didn't come out until the 90's. I do not expect many here on the forum to know your answer, unfortunately. Rebuilding a gearcase is not a common...

    BOAT PUNK

Ken, There are a lot of inexperienced posters and lurkers. It is important to help them with clear, precise and correct advice. Giving them advice that is not known by you to correct and proper or recommending products that are contrary to OEM guidelines is not what they need. The forum's...

    Merc 650 ignition system swap

First of all Merc didn't make a 650 in 1990. Those old model numbers were out in about 1980 or so. You might check the places the distributorless stator and trigger bolt on areas. I doubt the distributor motor has those. If the pistons, rods and crank are the same, you could swap 'em over...
