    Exhaust manifolds, time to replace?

Gee, 4.5 years is not usually a replacement point for manifolds and risers. It is usually about double that for those of us who do not flush 'em. Get some of those silver OEM gaskets, and true up the manifold and riser sealing surfaces with sandpaper on a piece of plate glass, to give a very...

    Mercury 20 hp 1977?

Remove the spark plugs, and turn the flywheel by hand. You should feel some compression in the crankcase, as she rotates. She should feel smooth, and except for the compression in the crankcase, she should turn over easily. If not, drop the gearcase and repeat the test. Gearcases can bind up.

2000 Sea Ray 190 CC Hull Soft Spot

I do not agree with tank. His definition of cored is different than mine. A cored hull has a core, like balsa, between two layers of fiberglass skin. I would be surprised if the area in question is built that way. Coring is usually reserved for decks, although the entire hull of my old...

2000 Sea Ray 190 CC Hull Soft Spot

I think you need to fix it from the inside. That means cutting out the deck and digging out any foam, until you find out why the spot is soft. If it has carpet, the deck fix will easily be hidden.

    Ignition Compatibility on 150hp Blackmax

The way I understand it, Merc made 2.0L blocks for the 135HP, 150HP, 200HP in the 80's. The 150HP and 200HP blocks became 2.4/2.5L blocks, and the 135HPV6 stayed with the 2.0L block. Just a bit of history. The 135HPV6 is a very good motor, IMO. I had a '77 1500 IL6, which was a beast at...

    Four Winns hull strength

Gee, you guys live on calm lakes. Legally boats are responsible for their wakes, but the acts of God are not. So, if a boat trashes your boat with their wake at the dock, you might be able to sue. Rough weather is not insured. I will expect that you will sometime have a freak wind/water...

Best fuel stabilizer for older 2 strokes

The first time you use the E10, it may well loosen and old dirt in the fuel system. You may need to change filters, or the carb may clog. After that, when the fuel system is cleaned by the e10, you shouldn't have any trouble with the E10 fuel. On a small motor like that, that you are not...

    Ignition Compatibility on 150hp Blackmax

I don't have a spec for the older high speed windings (2 yellow wire stator), but would think they should be the same as the newer stators with the 4 yellow wires. You might get on the CDIElectonics web site and see if they have a spec or a test for the switchboxes.

Trim Tilt 3 toggle control wiring.

So you replaced the original 3 button panel with two toggle switches? Does your trim limit switch still work? With the right type of toggle switches, it can work, however, isn't easier just to wire a single toggle switch to run both the up and down solenoids?

    Ignition Compatibility on 150hp Blackmax

Mercs have windings on the stator for low speed operation and separate windings for high speed operation. You might check your high speed winding. The stator from the older motor should fit the newer motor, but you should check the part numbers on a site like crowleymarine.

    2008 4.3 mercruiser carburetor

Sure, but it could be other stuff as well. Does your motor have a carb or some sort of fuel injection? Do you have any spark? If no spark, check the shift interrupt switch on the shift cable, at the motor. When you shift, the ignition is killed momentarily. They can stick, and you have no...

    Antifreeze Question

So you are filling the block and manifolds with A-F for winter storage? I would use the cheapest automotive antifreeze, full strength, and drain and recover it in the spring. In freshwater, the RV stuff would probably work just fine, as well, do to very low corrosion potential. My 4.3LX would...

    Wiring Problem on Tilt trailer

A tilt trailer is not different from any of the others you have pulled, at least electrically. If your car has "Imported style" tail lights, you need a converter to convert separate brake, turn signal and running lights to work with most trailer lights. Imported cars often have separate bulb...

    Center console jet drive

You could install a jet drive outboard onto a standard CC. Most any OB can be converted to jet drive. There is a significant (say 30%) power difference between a jet drive and a prop drive, so plan accordingly.

You also need to change the distributor timing disk from 6 "windows" to 4 "windows".

    Need help

A distributor from an inline 6 will work on your 4 cylinder IL, if you change the distributor cap, and they are the same vintage. 1974 IL4s were the last year of the distributor models. The first 1/2 of 1979 were the last of the IL6 distributor ignitions. I am not sure the first year the...

    Carburetor's

Aim for 1/2 way thru the range. That is pretty much how it is done on other motor's, they just have a different range. You may want to make sure the timing pointer is accurate as well. For idle pickup timing, remember to set the throttle so the carbs are closed and ready to open. I remove...

    Carburetor's

Dave is correct, but presents it in a confusing way. Idle pickup specification is what you want, not idle timing. see if your engine is in this service manual. They have newer models with CDM as well as the older ADI ignition...

    Need a bit of help.

The firing order is 153624. The switchboxes likely fire alternately. So one switchbox should fire 1,3,2 and the other switchbox should fire 5,6,4. Swap the switchbox wiring and see if the problem moves. If so, replace both switchboxes
