03 mercury 2 stroke 50hp grind when in neutral??

Disconnect the shift cable at the engine. Center the shift slider in neutral. Adjust the shift cable (control in neutral) to fit the shift slider.

1997 Mercury Optimax won't get on plane or stay running after first run.

Optimax's have a belt driven compressor, as they use both fuel pressure and air pressure to drive the gasoline into the cylinders. You might check the air filter on the compressor. A Mercury Optimax mechanic can put a diagnostic device on the motor, as well as pressure gauges on the air and...

    Carburetor's

Is that a Mercury service manual? The Clymer and Seloc service manuals often have big mistake in their instructions. I am not an expert on your motor, but all of the other motors that I have seen with ADI ignition have a spec for idle pickup timing that is in the ATDC range. I have never seen...

    Carburetor's

I hope you are reading the timing specs a bit wrong. Idle pickup timing is the point when the carbs are still closed, but ready to open. You need to set the throttle to the point when the carbs are just ready to be opened by the linkage. That is when you want the 2*-6* ATDC. Double check...

    1988 100hp mercury spark plugs

Gee, Scotty, did you check the fuel pump diagram for leakage? That would be my first check.

removing lower unit from Evinrude 1958 35Hp.25034 long shaft

I caqnnot tell if you have the gearcase off. I will assume you don't. Usually those mechanical shift motors have a hatch on the midsection, and another hatch under that in the exhaust passage. Under the second hatch is the shift rod connection. The bolts must be removed to separate the shift...

    Trim problems

Not all starter solenoids have a plunger that moves a gear to engage the flywheel. Most if not all outboards do not. Their solenoids simply make an electrical connection of two thick cables supplying enough power to spin the starter. The gear engages under centrifugal force. MerCruisers...

Sometimes the number of the ign key that fits the lock is printed on the ign switch. 128 does not seem to have enough characters to be a part number.

‘97 Johnson 150 Ocean Runner - Draining battery

I would think the voltage regulator is the main suspect, provided the wiring is in good shape.

Poppet Valve Kit for 85 Mercury Black Max 150 hp V6

Telltale should be warm at idle and other speeds. 143* or 147* makes no difference. If you can keep your hand under it, is fine.

    Stock plug for Evinrude 50

I unfortunately used the two terms interchangeably, which is likely a mistake. I do not know the precise difference, but I believe the Q suppressor is the right spark plug, for the OIS (optical Ignition System, that I assume you have. Resistor plugs were first used to help stop radio...

Poppet Valve Kit for 85 Mercury Black Max 150 hp V6

A Merc V6 engine should never overheat at idle, if the thermostats are working properly and the waterpump impeller is good. At idle the poppit should be closed, and therefore not part of the cooling system. Mercury water pump impellers will not pump well at idle if the bottom of the impeller...

I will assume you have one of the old MerControls that came with the motor. Those had a separate choke button, and a 5 post ign keyswitch. Newer keyswitches have a 6 post ign switch, with the new post being the choke. If you want to reuse the original control, you need to make sure you get an...

    Stock plug for Evinrude 50

I did not find that engine model number, however, an E50ELDE takes a Champion QL78YC, which is a Q resistor spark plug, and is pretty standard for that year and make. The way I understand it, using something other than a Q suppressor plug can impact the function of the ign system.

    Freshwater Boat to Saltwater

Use a good multi season ablative antifouling paint on the fiberglass. Boats can still have wax on their hulls after several years of use, so a primer for the A-F paint is a good idea. Big chunks of paint fall off on those boats that still had wax on the hull and were not primed. On a related...

    Battery Isolator question:

You should research a wiring diagram for a system like yours. I expect it to be common, and you can see if your system is wired correctly. A 3 bank Isolator should charge 3 batteries, or 3 sets of batteries. Any batteries that share a charging bank, will tend to equalize in charge and load...

I doubt the thermostats are accurate to 4*, so you are fine.

Go on the maxrules website to find a common wiring diagram for your motor. The 4 cylinder 50HP Merc was a real popular motor, so it was made for a long time. Try to find a wiring schematic close the year of your motor, as the wiring colors probably changed over the years your motor was made...

How about using an open end wrench on that spark plug? A whole bunch of Merc IL engines need you to use an open end wrench on their lowest spark plug.

Reenforce glass hull under the waterline? - 1967 StarCraft

It doesn't look like the stringers follow the contour of the hull. They look much flatter. Is there something under the stringer layer? Maybe there is foam under the fiberglass over the stringers? BTW - that is a lot more stringers than most boats have. It should be good and strong.
