    Mercruiser Identification

If it’s a 350 Mag, it built with the 5.7L GM block, which sounds consistent with what you found.

    Larson VEC transom core material

I don’t know if my ‘97 Larson is VEC or pre-VEC, but it has heavy engineered fiberglass stringers (foam-filled) and a wood transom core. I thought I read, when I was researching my boat, that the true VEC hulls had no wood,, but I am not entirely certain of that.

    Wood cost

Our local lumber yard is charging $15 for an 8’ 2x4. Normally, those are about $3. Crazy prices.

Nightmare of a first time boat buying experience. Comments and advice appreciated!

The key phrase in all this is “he is a car mechanic/used car dealership lot owner”. It wouldn’t surprise me if he hadn’t owned the boat that long (got it in a trade?) and actually didn’t know very much about it. In any case, it sounds like he certainly didn’t disclose the boat’s actual...

    Transom Leak Help

You easily could have a bottom strike that causes a leak to start without tearing the outdrive off the boat, if only the bottom part of the transom around the keyhole is rotted. It's really easy to check the transom yourself without incurring any cost from a shop. (I also have never heard of a...

    Transom Leak Help

A 2000 Larson would have structural fiberglass stringers and bulkheads - no wood. It's only too bad they continued to use wood in the transom.

    Questions regarding tow vehicle

How much fuel do you have in that gas tank in the bow? That could make a huge difference in tongue weight.

    Questions regarding tow vehicle

My F150 has a payload of 1977 lbs. With me, my wife and two adult friends riding in the cab, we already have used up about 800 lbs of payload capacity (assuming the passengers are some of our larger friends). If our trailer has a tongue weight of 450 lbs., we would have only 727 lbs. of...

Varnishing an oak swim platform - need advice please

Red oak is like a sponge. I'd coat the heck out of that sucker with varnish, and be ready to reapply regularly.

    Floor Joint Design?

If you have a decent cleat beneath the seam, I doubt a 45 degree joint will make much of a difference, but it cannot hurt. Glassing the underside is a good idea. Resin by itself will just crack if there is any flex at all, and that would pretty much defeat the purpose.

    Questions regarding tow vehicle

You probably would be well served by a visit to the scales to find out what your loaded truck and trailer combo is in reality. Everyone is always fixated on their towing capacity, but the real concern is usually payload. Your payload includes the tongue weight of your trailer, plus the weight...

1995 Bayliner Capri 1800LS bimini suggestions

There are lots of good places to buy biminis (including iboats, of course!). Mine is made by Carver with Sunbrella fabric and it has proven extremely durable.

    Make and Model?

Free or not, it's essential that you have current paperwork for the boat, trailer and outboard (some states require paperwork for the outboard in addition to whatever is needed for the boat). Be certain of what your state requires for you to own and register everything, or you may wind up with a...

1995 Bayliner Capri 1800LS bimini suggestions

Those may or may not work with a new bimini, depending on what size you get. I personally won't use the nylon brackets anymore after on broke while I was trailering (with the bimini folded and lowered, or course). I almost lost the entire bimini. The stainless steel brackets are much stronger...

    Floor Joint Design?

Are your joints going to be above a stringer/bulkhead or will they be floating? If the joint is not supported by structure below, at the very least, I'd have a plywood cleat that runs below the seam to which both decking boards are screwed. I'd want the cleat to overlap the seam on both sides...

Does ACR exist to charge start battery bank only if the volts drop below 12.45?

What are you talking about? Only 19 people out of 740 on Amazon rated it below 4 stars. That means 97.4% of the people who rated it gave it four stars or above. The average is 4.8 out of 5. It doesn’t get much better than that… And what is the big deal about using it for a power supply? I...

Stringer rot and Partial floor replacement

I am curious why you think you cannot split the cap and the hull. Is there not a rub rail that runs around the perimeter of the boat?

Help! 1976 Mark Twain restore it or junk it?!?

Also, while epoxy would work fine, keep in mind that this boat almost certainly was build with polyester resin. If you use polyester, it will be significantly less expensive than epoxy. Poly is a bit stinkier, but it would be a perfectly acceptable choice. My costs for poly resin, cloth/mat...
