Bent the Reese forged trailer ball mount tongue

The first pic looks like stamped steel tube? I'd never use that. The second pic, if that bends, I'd think something else would give first.

engine stalls when shifting back on forth a lot

Slow shifting results in the shift dog inside of the lower unit rounding off the teeth. That grinding you ear is that happening. Shift quick, but not so far as throttling up. Lower shift cables need replacement once in awhile. I'm 7 years into my last replacement, maby I'm lucky? dunno.

    City Water Hose Connection

Something about that don't look right. Usually there is a backflow preventer on the fitting. Did it come out with the hose? Edit, Looking closer, it did. The hoses are on the part that came out.

Never underestimate the power of the mechanical fuel pump

I've rebuilt many of these, the only issue I've ever had is if the float was not replaced it would flood. Now the breather in the fuel pump could be an issue, but I haven't looked at one for awhile. It should have the hose coming from it to the carb, so it vent's that way instead of leaking fuel...

Tip for reinstalling outdrive lower solo

Glad that worked for you. But when ever I'm servicing the unit, I remove the entire drive and inspect the bellows, gimble, u-joints ect.... The unit is on a stand and just set the top down on to the lower. For me it's easier to do the complete service.

    Shift cable

The cable itself should have a number stamped on it on one end or the other, about a foot from the end. Might be teleflex brand. Check the cable for numbers carefully. Never had a problem matching them up myself.

    Gelcoat cracking

if there is wood directly under the gelcoat, it will never hold up. Wood expands/contracts with the damp enviroment. Gelcoat don't, thus the many crack's. I'd suspect the wood is compramised also from the crack's.
