Mercruiser alpha one small amount of water in shift cable housing

What are you working on? A1G1 drive, if it's never been done needs the shift shaft bushing and seal replaced.

    Alpha one Gen 2 u-joints

Why did you remove everything from the input shaft?

There's no such thing as a reliable 30 year boat with an unknown history.

Is this the aluminum head 470.

Agreed, you'll still get a performance boost over what you have.

Get a 3.0 and lose 40 hp. What's the upside?

Is this the aluminum head 470.

Yeah, 6 month swap being the operative term. I've been completely unimpressed with the 4.3 so far in terms of everything except refinement. Definitely not worth the effort unless I can get some performance gains out of it. If it gets me up on a slalom then I'll be happy, but I'm not optimistic...

For discussion, mercruiser v6 , rochester, edelbrock

What would make the pressure all of a sudden jump on a mechanical pump? I'd still think of carp in the needle seat, would clean it out and run it in a remote tank to check.

No Power at Ignition or Instrument Panel

As always, since you didn't specify what you're working on, we'll assume that your wiring is identical to mine. You should have a red/purple wire to the ignition switch. The purple supplies the gauges and the ignition when the key is in the run position. So check power coming into the switch...

Meh, don't listen to the haters. If the donor is in good shape I'd go with that. Yes, the 4.3 is a better engine probably. But the 3.7 is pretty damn good overall. The quirks are less important in a 30 year old engine. That donor already has the alternator. Can't tell the hx size; an 89 should...

1989 180/3.7LX 4 bbrl Mercruiser Alpha One drive Questions

Guess I'm not clear what we're talking about. The driveshaft to the gear housing isn't hollow. The lubrication for the lower/gear housing is supplied by the passage between the 2 halves of the outdrive.

Are you swapping in a new engine or getting a new boat?

1989 180/3.7LX 4 bbrl Mercruiser Alpha One drive Questions

No, this actually isn't correct. Both seals have the spring side up. (Yes, I realize that that isn't how you'd think it should be) Also, drive shaft definitely isn't hollow Also also, a bad lower seal will still pressure test ok. You'll need to replace the upper as well.

    Running lean after engine swap

No, I think I'm fine throughout most of the range at this point, maybe even a touch rich. I had a revelation while sleeping last night. After getting the new tach readings it seems like my readings are off by the perfect amount if I'm set for a v8. 2500=3200, 3500=4500. I triple checked it...

1989 180/3.7LX 4 bbrl Mercruiser Alpha One drive Questions

There are two seals in that cavity. The upper seal is primarily responsible for keeping the oil in the housing. The lower seal is to keep water out of the normally dry cavity there. If that lower seal is shot, there's a good chance that your drive shaft is pitted and needs repair. The lower seal...

    Running lean after engine swap

Heh, hard when you're the only one on board. But yes, worth checking. 23p, quicksilver al. I'll have to check when it's idling ok to see what's going on. I may be on the wrong track, but i can't figure what else would cause this particular idle issue. It also doesn't seem to clear when I rev...

    Running lean after engine swap

That's not my understanding of how the system works. You want to be running in cruise mode unless under moderate part acceleration, when vacuum drops and you get into the power section of the rods. The spring strength (which is in inhg, realized I've been saying mm) determines at what vacuum you...
