Alpha 1 Gen 2 Drive Oil Leak

I use a rubber stopper. My understanding is that the upper can't be tested separate on a gen 2 though?

    What am I missing here?

Hmm. The thrust washer is on the drive, not in my pic. I don't see how that black piece would fit in the void. What I have in there actually looks like @Yegboats pic, but it doesn't go the full length of the prop. Lemme take a shot from the rear, might help. So I guess the real question is, any...

    4.3 Mercruiser cold start issues

This is only applicable to electric fuel pumps...if you have a mechanical pump there isn't an oil pressure switch.

If you just have a long block, what's driving the ignition and injectors? You don't need the ECU?

    What am I missing here?

Yeah, the thrust washer is there. I mean, the splines are there, so presumably there is some sort of hub in there. I just don't know if there should be that void there. I haven't seen a part that would fill it--it would be kind of 4 sided and conical.

    What am I missing here?

Swapped outdrives and went to swap the props. Took off the old one, which looked like the pic below. It's a standard quicksilver aluminum prop. God knows how long I've been running it like this with apparently no issues, but it struck me that there maybe should probably be more of a hub back...

    1983 Mercruiser Sterndrive - R

You won't be able to pump diesel in from the bottom. Either through the top, or pour in from the top cover. I know people do it, but man I'd be nervous running a solvent on my bearings. I certainly wouldn't give it any throttle. Fwd/reverse probably doesn't matter much, everything but the prop...

    Fired up today...

Beautiful weekend, decided to try to get the boat running before september this season ;) I had a spare outdrive from my donor boat that I decided to put on this year, appeared to be in better shape than my other one, and I started low speed overheating at the end of last season. I changed the...

How would you start the non carb motors without the electronics?

    4.3 Mercruiser cold start issues

Doesn't matter, on the initial start the bowl should be full. Pumping the throttle should give it enough gas to get started.

It'll be obvious if it's bellows when you pull the drive. Probably not though; water through the bellows would end up in the boat (possible with small leak that you didn't notice if the bilge pump was keeping up). Also possible if a lot of water got in the boat and leaked backwards into bellows

At least do a compression check on it. That will tell you a lot. BYOB (battery). Why won't he let you start it?

1973 Mercruiser 165 will not start

Yes, trace the wiring but that isn't your only problem if it isn't starting with a 12v jumper. What's connected to the neg of the coil? Disconnect everything but the wire to the points. Actually, first disconnect everything except a jumper. Hook up a plug tester to the coil. Tap the jumper on a...

Alpha 1 Gen 2 Drive Oil Leak

And removing the outdrive is annual maintenance. You'll want to check your alignment (get a tool off of ebay), as well as your gimbal bearing and ujoints. It's also much easier to split the drive when it's off the boat

    1998 3.0 limited RPM

As always, I'd make sure the mechanicals are sound before you go mucking around with the prop. You might be able to find out what size came on that boat new. But I'd at least check compression and timing, make sure your bottom is clean (the boat...), fresh gas, maybe new plugs, make sure you're...

1973 Mercruiser 165 will not start

Not sure of your exact wiring, 8-9 volts may be enough to have it kick, but 3-4 isn't enough to keep it running. First thing is to trace your coil (+) back to your ignition switch and see where you're losing voltage. You should have about 10v with the key on (if you have a resistance wire). You...

Also, is this fresh water or salt? That aluminum intake may not be right for salt if it's an auto intake.
