No spark plug spark... 170 MC , 1985 Sea Ray

Whoops. Everyone forgot that this is a 170. The 12v coil voltage is supplied by the slave solenoid, not directly by the starter.

No spark plug spark... 170 MC , 1985 Sea Ray

Did this not seem like relevant information before now? 🙄

No spark plug spark... 170 MC , 1985 Sea Ray

Wondering if something is intermittently shorting to ground the coil neg. Open the points and check for continuity to ground from the coil neg.

    Thermostat Housing Check Balls

I didn't have the fitting on mine (I have an automotive block).

    Thermostat Housing Check Balls

Winterized my 4.3 last week and noticed the same thing. The starboard engine plug was the last removed. I was back out today though, so will winterize it again next week. Going to start with that plug and see what happens

Ball Valves on engine to make raw water draining easier

I know, just joking. I read through the old thread until I got to the end and realized kellerj had resurrected it.

Ball Valves on engine to make raw water draining easier

I was waiting for @GA_Boater to get all 😡 and close this thread 😁 Do you have a pic or the size of the ball joint you ended up using? I'm intrigued.

No spark plug spark... 170 MC , 1985 Sea Ray

This makes me think the problem is the points, or adjustment of the points. EDIT: hadn't read @Scott06 response. Agreed.

    4.3L intake manifold drain?

That's what I did, but nothing came out = no need to pull it. Looks like this weekend so far is shaping up to be around 70', sunny, no wind. So I may yet dewinterize and rewinterize. Missing the 470!

    Output shaft slop

The important part is not the shaft wear, but the coupler wear. IIRC they're aluminum or something significantly softer than the shaft. And no, you can't use the shaft as an alignment tool. The tolerances are tighter on the tool.

No spark plug spark... 170 MC , 1985 Sea Ray

Might be worthwhile to try disconnecting the coil (-) wires. Put a jumper on coil (-) and with the ignition on, touch the jumper repeatedly to ground. You should get a spark from the coil tower whenever you remove the jumper from ground. That will take the points out of the equation for now...

    4.3L intake manifold drain?

So, went to winterize today (so final compared with the 3.7l!). Wow, glad I removed the petcocks and probed the drains on the block. Not sure the purpose of those except to help sell short blocks in the spring. All took me 30-40 min, could do it easily in half that next time I think. But I...

    Running lean after engine swap

All from last weekend, a bit chilly today. So it looks like this was the problem. My tach adjustment is weird, and I needed to put the screw between 2 settings. It's now reading consistently 150 rpm high, which I can live with. Also checked my fuel consumption, which was 3.8+ mpg over 85 miles...

    Bravo 3 oil fill siezed

+1... Impact screwdrivers are amazing. I have the HF model above, used it a couple of weeks ago for a seized gear lube screw on an alpha

    Did you check your compression?

    No spark 4.3 Mercruiser

That's what the switch does; when it has oil pressure the switch closes and connects the power from the purple wire to the p/y wire.
