Mako started in 1966 building a 19-foot bay boat that it believes changed sportfishing vessels forever. The group decided to take it to the Miami Boat Show in 1967 and it was a huge hit. 400 orders were taken for the vessel which is almost unheard of for one model. Robert Schwebke was the founder of the company and he saw a need for an offshore fishing boat for the common man. At the time, most of these vessels were the heavy-duty watercrafts. One day he was fishing with a friend and a mako shark was caught and put in the well. That sea creature was so powerful it jumped out of the well and sank its teeth into the deck and other items on the boat. It eventually jumped its way back to the water and swam away. Schwebke knew what he would call his company after recalling that story. Now that is what Mako prides itself on is building a boat that is stronger than it needs to be and can hold up to rough waters. Tracker Marine Group (now White River Marine Group) took over ownership in the 1990s and so it allows owners to join a vast network to boating.
