Solar Piling Cap Lite (Video)
Video TranscriptToday we'll be performing a Piling Cap Lite installation on fixed dock pilings. The Piling Cap Lite will fix universally on pilings with flat, conical or no piling caps at all. These are the tools you'll need; a #2 Phillips screwdriver or long driver bit, you'll also need a level, a cordless or electric drill, a 3/32 inch drill bit and optionally tools for leveling the pilings such as a chainsaw, sawsall, chisel or wood shims. Before you begin your installation this product may have been in a sealed carton for a prolonged period of time. Remove the product from the carton and any protective film covering the solar panel.
Underneath the top of the Piling Cap Lite is a series of switches which will allow you to choose one of six colors of the illumination. Only one switch should be turned to the on position at any given time. Turning on more than one switch may result in the Piling Cap Lite not operating properly. Once the color has been set simply screw the top back onto the Piling Cap Lite.
Expose the unit facing the sun for a minimum of 8 to 10 hours of full sunlight. If weather conditions don't permit this, place the product 12 to 14 inches away from a strong spotlight for 2 to 3 hours. Once the product is charged, cover the solar panel completely to ensure it illuminates in the absence of light.
The Piling Cap Lite can be mounted on any surface larger than 5 inches in diameter. The Piling Cap Lite base is configured to fit any dock piling 5 inches or more in diameter. If making multiple installations, ideally all Piling Cap Lites should be installed on posts no less than 6 feet apart. This is to ensure that the light emitted from one Piling Cap Lite won't affect the solar sensor of another. When choosing to post on which you will be installing the piling lites, keep in mind that Piling Cap Lites placed in areas with poor sunlight exposure will not work as well as Piling Cap Lites placed in areas with good sunlight exposure.
Place the Piling Cap Lite based on the chosen piling cap and check the level. Use the base of the lite as a template for making and/or drilling pilot holes. Secure the base to the piling of each of the three mounting points with the screws provided. Screw the lens section on to the Piling Cap Lite base.
Now let's recap the piling lite installation. Plan your Piling Cap Lite placement to be a minimum of 6 feet apart. Level the top of the piling by cutting or shimming the top of the piling. Place the Cap Lite based on to the leveled piling and drill pilot holes. Secure the Piling Cap Lite base to the piling with the screws provided. Reattach the lens section to the base. Set the illumination color as desired. Allow a minimum of 8 to 10 hours of sunlight to charge your Piling Cap Lites.
