The EPA is now issuing regulations on fuel systems. In the past, the regulations did not deal with fuel permeation through rubber hoses, plastic fuel tanks, and diurnal emissions released from the expansion of fuel vapor in the tank. However, now they do.
Hose and tank manufacturers have already begun making new products meet these new guidelines. The new products must pass four strenuous tests including a 2.5 minute fire test, a slosh test, pressure impulse, and a static pressure test.
The hardest part will be containing diurnal emission or the evaporative emissions released through the boats fuel vent due to the daily cycle of liquid fuel. The release happens when evaporation of liquid and fuel during the day settles during the night.
