I have a alpha 1 Gen 1 outdrive. I have taking it off and split the two and changed the impeller. I then made sure the lower was locked in forward and reassembled to the upper. I re-greased the u-joints and splines and such. It was in forward gear to remove and came out easy. The shoe was straight and put new gaskets on and put the drive in no problem which I have done this procedure 20 times before with no problems. When I tried to put it in reverse it won't go. I took it off again and made sure Everything looked ok and tried the shifter on the console and it worked fine without the drive installed. I tried shifting the outdrive manually inside the lower and when it was put together and it was all fine. It was working fine before I did anything. Very frustrating..... Any ideas please???
Thanks scott

I actually took it apart twice and tried both counter and counter clock wise. I'm going to drain the gear oil in it tonight and try it again.

There are only three things that can go wrong with the alpha I. You lost (or bent) the washer under the intermediate shift shaft and the intermediate and upper shift shafts are not properly coupled. The gearcase was in reverse rather than forward when you put it together and the intermediate shaft shaft went on " off a spline" in which case the control will jam when you try to shift to reverse, or the roller on the underside of the upper shift shaft lever was not captured between the two arms of the shift slide (behind the aft arm in your case), and the control will move freely back and forth. Before you split the outdrive again, turn the intermediate shift shaft all the way clockwise, and if it points straight ahead, and the prop locks when you rotate the prop counterclockwise, then the gearcase should be Ok. If the roller is properly captured by the shift slide, and it still will not shift, try a cable adjustment, if that does not work you may have a worn shift spool in the gearcase. Good luck.
