Looking at the either the 4 stroke 150 or the 4 stroke 115. I've got a pontoon that running empty is at about 2100lbs. Ive currently got a 83 evinrude 115. Any recommendations on which one to choose besides price.

Re: 115 vs 150

Guy who bought my old 3.0 liter 225 put it on his pontoon so I think just about anything is possible now. People ski behind that thing.

Your biggest problem is going to be the weight. Both 4 strokes are going to be considerably heavier than your 115. The guy who put the 225 on his pontoon did it by adding another pontoon in the center. FWIW modern 90 HP is going to be the equivalent to that old 115. Different rating systems on the old 2 strokes.

As much as I like to grossly overpower everything I'd go 115. Good enough power for that minivan of the sea and better gas mileage.150 is kind of overkill.

Hawker - I honestly couldn't tell you what the transom is rated for (boats at a marina) I bought it off at the end of last season. But I can tell you that the old evinrude weighs in at roughly 310lbs and I had myself and a buddy (both about 225) standing at the back 2 days ago and there was about 2 inches of clearance to the water and I think that both mercs I have looked at the 150 weighs in at 445 and the 115 is at 405.

wired - I'm right there with go big or go home. With the old evinrude I was able to pull someone on a raft very easily, but I guess my question kinda boils down to why stop at a 115 but when I can go 900 bucks more and get a 150?

There actually quite a bit of difference between standing at the back of the boat and putting more weight behind the boat. Inches matter back there. Have a 140 lb person sit on top of the motor to get a better idea of what the extra weight will do. THEN put a couple of people at the back of the boat and see where the rear sits.

Before you make any changes find the transom rating.
