I have a 120hp 1992 Bayliner with the L drive, I damaged the lower unit. I bought a replacement on ebay but the Shift Lever (rod) on the replacement lower unit is much longer than the one on my original. Can I unscrew the lever (rod) from the lower unit on both of the units and trade them out, I am afraid when I unscrew it the inside will drop, and then I wont be able to trade the linkages from one to the other. Thanks for any insight!

I thought the rods were all the same length??? NOT!!
But depending on the lower unit style there can be a difference. Post a pic of the new and old unit from the side.
The rod can unscrew.
Just put the drive in an upright position.
Don't move ANYTHING!!!
Unscrew it and when it's free pull gently until the threads are felt at the cover and then unscrew it from the cover or you'll damage the seal.
Then the new rod, screw it through the seal(don't push it through) until it comes in contact with the shift arm. Screw in gently.
Even with all the care it still might slip and fall.
Then just remove the cover and you'll be able to see where it goes.
Re-assembly: the cover can be tricky. Make sure the gaskets new and the surfaces very clean and dry.
Use some sealer and pressure test.
