125 FORCE

Have 1988 Force outboard. Burnt out rectifier and melted the batt wire were it conected to it. Couldn't find any shorts or obveous problems. Now engine backfires but wont start. checked coils and stator. Any help

Sounds like you have fried more than than the recitifier. You might want to check out the whole electrical system before trying to run the motor too much..

Hi awake, the Big Sky Guy is right. If you don't have them I suggest you pick up a force manual and a digital VoltOhmMeter, a VOM. I suggest digital because analog needle type meters can be hard to interpert, especially on Ohms. The Clymers Force Manual has a detailed step by step troubleshooting sections for the ignition, charging, and starting circuits, without it you are shooting in the dark. Good luck.
