I just bought an abandoned project boat. It's a 1957 Higgins 17 footer, and looks to be in surprisingly decent shape. The Chrysler 6-cyl flathead engine is out of the boat, and I'm picking it up tomorrow. Today I brought home the engine doghouse and all the (newly recovered) seats, as well as all of the hardware, steering wheel, gas tank, port/strb front light, windshield (but no windshield frame, plywood inner panels, etc.

The Chrysler flat-head 6 is a model R. Can anyone confirm this engine was designated by Chrysler as the Crown engine? Can anyone point me to a source for engine tune-up specs, or a manual?

The boat has no bottom--the previous owner damaged the original plywood bottom scraping paint in order to repaint, and then he removed the plywood, but then stopped working on it. Fine with me. The frame work looks fine--no rot that I can see, but I don't have the boat in my shed just yet. I am thinking I'll put a 5200 bottom on it. It originally had a 1/2" marine grade mahog. bottom I believe.

Are there any Higgins owners here?

I only have these for right now. I'll go back to where the boat is tomorrow to try to figure out how to get it out of the barn it is currently in.

The seller said he had both the generator and starter converted to 12 volts. But from my 4 classic Chevy restorations I know early '50's 6-volt starters hold up just fine on 12 volts. Generators, however, are another story. I'll take the gen in to my rebuild guy and have it tested.

Since my last post, I've discovered the Higgins is not a '57. At some point in the 1950's Higgins switched from Chrysler flathead 6 bangers, to Ford V-8 Interceptors. I've found pictures of a '56 Sport Speedster with the Ford V-8. But I still haven't discovered when mine was built. The data tag reads: Model: H 17 SSS C 125. I7 is the length of the boat. SSS, I think means the model--Sport Speedster. Does C mean it's powered by a Chrysler engine? Maybe. And could 125 be a code for Dec, 1955? Maybe. The serial number is 13361. Can anyone help?
