I've searched this forum for more detailed information regarding the operation of the clutch plates but could not find such information.

The outdrive is no longer supported by the clutch.

I have installed a new electric motor which operated the system fine without the weight of the outdrive.
I pulled the clutch plates-rusty and dirty with water and oil mixed. Worm gear appears fine, only 1 pin on the shaft (not 2 like later models).

So the plates are somewhat pitted and I wire brushed what I could without taking off the coating. I used brake cleaner then soaked them in oil.
Still not enough pressure to hold up outdrive.

What are the solutions?
New clutch plates and seal pack?

I will definitely be packing grease into the worm gear area after reading up on these marvels of design.

I may have a line on a local used clutch pack, which if clean may be the answer.

I saw that someone has used a pin in their clutch pack which probably is not a great idea if I hit a rock at speed.

Thank you

I think for clutch pack parts you're going to be on eBay or CL. I don't think they're available any longer. So, take a look at that local pack for sure.

Check the retaining ring for flatness and be certain it is actually i stalled. If the ring is bowed (not flat) install it with the bow inward. Unless the retaining ring is installed the pack cannot work.

Thanks-sorry for delayed response to my question. Retaining ring is on and is flat. There is another washer that is bowed inward.

Is this outdrive considered a 400 or 800 series?

Neither: It's an Electric Shift. 400 / 800 were used on the hydro-mechanical and mechanical shift Stringers.

I've seen that engine list page but not the history page-thank you for that as well!
