Hello all.

Well we pulled the out drive on the old girl. We did a pressure test on the upper and lower unit. She held pressure. Actually we were very surprised by that. But what we did notice were two things. As oil ran down the side of the upper unit, The oil leaked down and came out of the exhaust housing. I know this is not the greatest description, but that is why I am attaching a couple of pictures to show what I am talking about. Also there seems to be a hole where a plug seems to go, but this plug is missing. Do either of these actually matter? Or should we pull the lower unit and seal this . Also I do not see a gasket between the Lower unit and the exhaust housing. Is this sealed another way?

Any input would be greatly appreciated. I have read really good information on these boards.

Thanks in advance.

Jim.

you do not pressure test when the drive is full of oil. you empty the drive, then pressure test.

the two halves are not sealed like you think. the upper section is sealed against the raw water pump, the lower plugs into it. when you pull the drive apart to replace the water pump, you will understand.

Hey Scott thanks for the reply. The oil was drained before the test. And I got the feeling from the diagrams that the two units were not sealed, but I just wanted to make sure.

Thank you.

Jim.
