New to all this and looking for help.

1983 searay v197 with 5.7 liter omc engine. The stern drive will told down fine. When you push the switch up it clicks for a second and as long as you hold the switch you can raise the sterndrive by hand.

I have replaced the solenoids and nothing changed.

If I have to replace the tilt motor do I have to pull the engine? It's deep in there and I can't imagine getting it out And a new one in otherwise.

The tilt motor probably needs to replaced . I know these things are hard to get to. The bolts are not hard to turn , sometimes a long extension and flex socket. There is a plastic washer on either side of the spring coupling which may come out with the motor. Be sure to re install it.

You may also want to check your battery charge before you go tearing off into the motor. Sometimes if the battery is getting weak, those tilt motors didn't want to lift the drive.

You also may not have to replace the electric motor: If you have a good shop around that rebuilds them, I had good success with that.

Getting the motor out is not too hard, but typically requires daring feats of physical dexterity ... like you folding up like a cheap accordion to fit in small places :) On my boat it was worth it to remove the dog house and seats to get to the tilt motor. Watch it when you remove it - there's a hammer coupler just inside the assembly and it's going to want to jump out and fall down your bilge. You need that coupler and you don't want to have to find another one. Mine would hop right out when I took the motor off, but I was ready for that and knew where it would go.

Welcome aboard.

Thanks so much! I just put a new battery in so I know it's not that. I did get a good laugh as I was sore from this past weekend just digging around and replacing solenoids. You pretty much described what I must have looked like this weekend.
