Specs:
1984 Sea Ray 245 Cuddy Cruiser
260 Mercruiser on a 350 V8 - Serial 6842157
1984 4 barrel Rochester Quadrajet - 17080561
Gas in tank is from a Kroger (grocery store) where I buy gas for all my vehicles.

I apologize if I am asking something that has already been answered. I did some searching and found this problem to have come up before, but never really read a solution. Please point me to the correct thread if this is the case.

I purchased the boat a few months ago and up until a few weeks ago it has been running flawless. Starts right up, idles smooth, powers up and holds rpm, can run all day at 3800 rpm. A few weeks ago I was out and the issues started. I was on plane running about 3,800-4,000 for about 15 minutes when all of a sudden the engine started to bog and slow down, then would jump back up then bog and slow down, and do this cycle over and over until it finally stopped. I cranked it over and it started right up and idled fine. Brought her back up on plane around 3 grand and it did it again. I played around with it and figured out that it will only show the issue above about 1500 rpm. I limped it back to the dock, got on the internet and then did the following:

Checked the tank vent - clear
Replaced the fuel filter
Replaced the water/fuel separator
Removed and cleaned the carb fuel filter
Removed and cleaned the spark arrestor
Added 6 gallons of premium gas - now has about 15 regular and 5 premium

Took it back out and everything ran fine for 15 minutes at 3800 then did the same thing once warmed up. If I pumped the throttle while it's happening it will re-gain and catch up - almost like it's starving for gas/air. So I checked the choke pull off and divorce switch. Both working fine. Once it started bogging I put it in neutral and waited a few minutes - took it back on plane and it would run for about 30 seconds. The longer I took a break in neutral, the longer it would run afterwards. If I let it bog to the point of stall, it will restart the first time. If I do this 2 or 3 times it will then act like the battery is dead. I switch from both batteries to 1 and it will fire back up.

I just replaced the plugs, cap, rotor, and am waiting for my plug wires and ignition coil to get here. If this doesn't work I don't know what to do. Any ideas?

Summary:
After warm up, loses power when running anything over 1500 rpm. Bogs and will eventually stall if not throttled off into neutral.

welcome aboard.

it does sound fuel related.

have you checked your fuel pump pressure (read the stickies at the top of the forums)?

Even though you checked the tank vent it does sound like a venting problem.

Thanks for the input and the reference. I haven't tried the fuel test because I don't have the proper tools. If the coil doesn't do the trick I will buy the gauges I need.

most people buy a new coil only to find it wasnt the coil. it usually never is the coil

Disconnect the tachometer wire from the coil and see if that makes a difference. Often, when the coil is suspected, it is really the tachometer shorting it out at certain rpm's.

Went back out today after changing the plugs, wires, cap, and rotor and getting the cylinders back firing right. Stupid mistake on my part for rushing and not hooking the wires up right.

Still does the original problem. Here's a video of the tach as the problem occurs.

Im going to go out and take the tachometer wire off the coil....just have to figure out which one that is first.

I took the wire from the coil to the tachometer off and the issue is still there. I did not remove the wire from the coil to the module though. Should I have tried this also?

After I tried that I put in a new, correct, coil. That wasn't it either.
