i have a 2 cylinder motor. Does the #1 cylinder only fire until i hit faster speeds? I have checked all coils, plugs, etc... Only the #1 cylinder seems to work (engine sounds good). Can someone explain to me how it is supposed to work? thanks darin

Both cylinders should be firing at all rpm's.
Sounds like you have an ignition problem. Sorry, not my area of expertise.

What they said. You have an ignition, fuel, or compression problem.
Check the comporession first, because if it is out of spec, no sense in going any further until you have pulled the head and inpected gasket,piston crown and cylinder walls.

If compression is up to snuff;
while the plugs are out,what do they look like? They can tell you more of what is going on than I can.
Replace them if they have over 80 hours on them or look funky. But again, note condition.

On the port side of the block, there is an 8-lug terminal strip(16-screws). Remove one connection at a time. Get a dremmel or other high speed polisher with a rotary brush bit, and clean the terminal lug and connector until shiny.
Reattach, and go to the next one, until all 8 have been done on both sides of this strip.
There are also some bullet connectors going to the CD unit and from the CD unit to the coils. Get these spotless clean too.
Coat the whole terminal strip when done with a good non-conductive grease to keep the corosion at bay.
One last thing before the big buks...Start her on the muffs on a dark night with the cowling off, and look for arcing. Regardless of where it is seen, this is early-death to the CD box, and surely, the cause of your low-speed missing.

If still no good, it is time for "the book", and an expensive trip to the parts shop.

Check your ground to battery connection for the #1 coil. Coils won't fire if ground not clean/secure and tight. Use a jumper to trouble shoot with out having to disassemble.
