Goes in forward and reverse ok out of water but Jumps out of reverse even with the Remote shift held, in fact it kicks in the hand when in the water. Thought I had it when I saw the horizontal shift shaft bushings shot and the shift rod out of adjustment but no luck. Everything seems to be in order outside of the lower unit.
Any thoughts on this would be greatly appreciated.

Re: 1985 GT 150 Shift problem.

That engine has a specific height measurement for the shift rod that goes down into the lower unit gearcase. The setting is critical for proper shifting into/out of gear. If the lower unit was ever off for service, such as a water pump impeller, the shift rod height may have become altered slightly. Sometimes you can compensate for slight mis-adjustment at the top of the engine-in the lower cowling. If the shift rod height is just too far off, you can't adjust it on top. You may need to pull the lower unit and check/correct the rod height measurement. The shift rod screws/unscrews into the lower. My 86 manual calls for a 22 1/16" +- 1/32" height from the top deck of the lower to the center of the hole in the top of the shift rod. Probably the same for your 1985. It's very unlikely the gear face and clutch dog are worn in the reverse positon.

Re: 1985 GT 150 Shift problem.

Thanks emdsapmgr. You are correct in the measurement. My manual gives the same for 85 on. Before putting the lower back after service I did check and adjust the rod, however I could have got it wrong. I will pull the lower again and check the setting. I believe it should be in reverse when setting the length. If the setting is correct I may try screwing the rod out a turn or so. What are your thoughts on this?

That may be the problem. Set the shift rod height in neutral, with the offset facing forward.

Of course you are correct. In checking the manual again neutral is the set point. I have set accordingly and am keeping the fingers crossed that that will do the trick. Will know after the pond test.
Thanks again.

Re: 1985 GT 150 Shift problem.

Sorry for the delay in updating. Stripped the lower and found damage to the reverse gear/shift dog assembly. Replaced and all is well.
Thanks for all the input guys.
