Hi I have a 1986 Aries 17ft bass boat that needs all new wiring and stringers, stringers completely rotted. So I'm guessing removing the cap would be the only way to address these problems. I'm pretty handy but I have never done this before so looking for any advice I could get. Also, more than likely the transom may be rotten that's just a guess because of the stringers being completely rotted. The only thing I got going for me right now is the hull is in great shape, no cracks or fiberglass missing, for the year the hull is in such great shape it really surprised me to find the stringers all rotted out.

Welcome,

If the stringers are gone more than likely the transom is too. If you are that deep in, I would replace the transom anyway. Peace of mind and there is no point in doing it again in a few years when the transom is soft.

Post pictures of the boat to help when it comes to answers or otherwise they will be generic.

Before removing the cap build a cradle for the hull so it does not distort when all the structure is gone. Otherwise you will have issues installing the cap back on if it will even go back on.

Read through the pinned threads at the top of the forum also watch some videos on youtube. Lots of great info to get you started.

first, welcome aboard

the transom rotted before the stringers, follow the advice above.

4th sticky down is the DIY on boat restoration, make sure to read links 14, 15, 18, 2, 3, 4a, and 4b in that order.

build a cradle, pull the cap, put on the PPE and fire up the saws and grinders

you have a 35 year old fiberglass boat that was not only designed to last 15 years or less and be replaced, it was built in the 80's when workmanship on boats was less than stellar
