Im thinking about buying a 1986 Johnson 90hp and would like a little info and or "Words of wisdom".
The motor is for sale because the owner apparently upgraded to a new more efficient motor. I need to know compression specs. what is considered good, acceptable and poor. (I am aware of the importance of even compression)
Are there any known issues with these motors? I wont be able to run the motor since it's been removed from the boat. Is $800 cdn reasonable if the motor is reasonable shape?
Oh yeah, one last question... Was hp rated at the prop in 1986?

Re: 1986 Johnson 90hp questions

I would call anything over 100psi acceptable compression using my guage and my testing technique, cookie. Guages and technique vary too much to be more specific than that.

The VRO oil injection system was not very well trusted in that period.

By 1986 OMC rated all their engines at the prop.

I would say that $800CDN is in the mid to high range for that engine not demonstrated on the water.
