I have a 1988 Suzuki 40 HP and have been having quite a few problems lately. I recently ran ground pretty hard (no bouys out yet) and had a hard time restarting the egine. I raised the rev bar all the way and choked the engine but whenever I would put the bar back down to idle the engine would cut out. Eventually I lowered the bar and slammed it into gear and went on my merry way. Next time i started it, it started and idled and I thought everything was alright. I went home and flushed out the engine and checked the oil levels to see if the engine had been taking the oil since this was the first ride of the season. It was taking but a considerable amount of oil was gone from the marked line I had made earlier. I went out again earlier today and everything was good. Engine started first time. I went to anchor and put the engine in idle while I got the anchor out. After about 2 minutes in idle the engine cut out. I tried to start it and just like last time once I put it into idle it cut out. I did the same as before to get it started and went home. In my canal everything was fine until suddenly the engine started running very rough. It slowed even though I didn't touch the throttle. I instinctively went to speed up and it wouldn't. About 5 seconds later it regained power but quickly cut out. Once again idled and cut out, and again had to salm it into gear. Got home and I flushed the engine again but it cut out once again while idling. I have no idea what could be wrong and any insight would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance

I'm not sure that your running aground has anything to do with your engine idling difficulties. Unless you badly overheated the engine due to ingesting sand, and your description doesn't sound like it, you are describing an engine that simply needs a tune up. Replace the spark plugs, check the compression on the engine, readjust the idle air screws. Perhaps you are due for a carb rebuild also.
